Public asked to aid in fight against violent drop houses

Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas unveiled his newest weapon to fight the violence associated will illegal immigration.

"The Drophouse Education Initiative uses radio and television public service announcements that will begin airing next week," he said. "The public service announcements give a 24-hour telephone number at the sheriff's office. They can call should they suspect a drophouse in their neighborhood."

"Drop houses and human smuggling should be combated. (They are) illegal, foment violence, other crime. I would hope and expect that all of us could unite."

Thomas said this campaign comes in the wake of a violent attack June 22 in a Phoenix neighborhood where illegal immigrants donning police gear and imitating police tactics, stormed a Phoenix home and shot 100 rounds, killing a man.

In the ad, a narrator says: "Armed gangs involved in human smuggling have made Phoenix the kidnapping capital of America."

According to ICE, 163 drop houses were discovered in the Phoenix area in 2007. More than 3,000 illegal immigrants were taken into custody.
