AZ Senate gives initial OK to bill on day laborers

AZ Senate gives initial OK to bill on day laborers
    Reported by: Associated Press
    Last Update: 1:40 pm

On Tuesday, a bill to prohibit day laborers from seeking work on public streets and sidewalks and private property under some circumstances is nearing the finish line at the Legislature but faces an uncertain fate after that.

The bill is sponsored by Rep. John Kavanagh.

The Fountain Hills Republican says it applies both to day laborers and those who hire them.

The state Senate on Monday gave preliminary approval to the House-passed bill.

Formal approval by the Senate would send the bill to Gov. Janet Napolitano.

She vetoed a version last year, but won't discuss whether this year's version is more palatable.

Kavanagh says the bill is intended to lessen the traffic disruptions caused by day laborers and, as a secondary benefit, help lessen the state's problems with illegal immigration.

I hope this passes. "Day laborers" waiting/looking for work are loitering, blocking the way into businesses and harass passers by...

I wont go anywhere near a place that allows day laborers to stand and beg the customers for work. I hope that Hime Depot goes out of business for allowing these thugs to use their parking lot as an employment agency.

Don't see why there would be any opposition.
