Smuggling suspects fired upon them, border agents report

Tucson, Arizona | Published: 03.28.2007

Border Patrol agents working northeast of Sasabe were fired at by suspected drug smugglers Tuesday night, an official said.
According to Gus Soto, a spokesman for the agency's Tucson Sector, an unknown number of agents were working in an area known as Martinez Well — south of Arivaca and east of Sasabe — at about 9 p.m. when they encountered what they believed to be smugglers.
Soto did not know exactly what happened but said that after the agents approached the suspected smugglers, shots were fired at the agents.
The agents were not struck, and Soto did not know if they fired back.
The suspected smugglers fled and had not been caught late Tuesday, he said. An undetermined amount of marijuana was found in the area.
