Stringent rules for Mesa contract cleaners

Wednesday, November 26, 2008

MESA, AZ — Mesa will soon require cleaning contractors to prove their employees can legally work in the United States, according to KVOA TV.

The new rules, having contractors provide a detailed list of employees and swearing to it that they are legal, come in light of an October 16 raid on City Hall resulting in arrests of 16 employees from a city contract cleaner, the story stated.

Any workers who require a building access security badge will need to show a federally authorized identification card, the story noted.

According to the Pew Hispanic Center, 17 percent of all JanSan employees (an estimated 680,000 workers) are illegal immigrants.
