Close to 100 people have benefited from the Institute of Mexicans Abroad (known by its Spanish acronym IME) Scholarship Program, with participation from organizations such as Campesinos 3in Fronteras, Chicanos Por La Causa, school districts and city officials.
A news release announced that this campaign is one of the most successful that the Mexican government has initiated in Yuma County.
The program has provided people with financial support to help them complete their education, training or to learn English.
Mexican Consul Miguel Escobar first proposed the idea to IME advisers Emma Torres and Everardo MartÃ*nez to create the Education Access Council for Yuma Communities (EACYC), where different agencies participate.
EACYC has provided training to hotel employees, agricultural workers, homemakers, mall workers, unemployed people or those interested in different training to obtain a scholarship that will allow them to continue their education or training in the U.S.
The IME scholarship program is the only one that offers educational support to people who traditionally have a hard time getting help.
The campaign initiated by the Mexican Consulate in Yuma has strengthened the EACYC and especially Campesinos Sin Fronteras, the fiscal agent that administrates the scholarships through strong collaboration with federal and community entities.
