Barack Obama attacks best-selling book as poisonous crap

Barack Obama attacks best-selling book as poisonous crap
Senator Barack Obama has launched a full broadside against a best-selling book that attacks him as a Muslim-educated radical Leftist filled with "black rage".

The author of Obama Nation, Jerome Corsi, claims that Barack Obama has 'extensive connections to Islam' Photo: AP
In a 41-page document entitled "Unfit for Publication", the Obama campaign rebuts Jerome Corsi's Obama Nation (a play on "abomination") almost point by point. Its faux book cover carries quotations from Time magazine branding the book, which has shot to the top of the New York Times best-seller list, as "trash" and "poisonous crap".

The title of the Obama rebuttal is an allusion to Unfit for Command, the book co-written by Corsi that damaged the 2004 Democratic nominee and Vietnam veteran John Kerry by portraying him as a liar and a coward.

Branding Corsi as a "bigoted fringe author" who is peddling "rehashed lies", the Obama campaign lists the numerous factual inaccuracies in the book.

"His is just one of what will likely be many more lie-filled books rushed to print this election cycle, which are cobbled together from debunked Internet sources to make money and advance a partisan agenda," said Tommy Vietor, a campaign spokesman. "We will respond to these smears forcefully with all means at our disposal."

Corsi's book contains little new evidence or original research but draws extensively from newspapers and the internet to highlight lurid theories and pose portentous questions.

He states that Mr Obama has "extensive connections to Islam" (he is a Christian, though his father was a non-practising Muslim) and suggests that his admitted youthful drug taking may have continued to the present day.

The book is published by Threshold Editions, an imprint of Simon & Schuster that specialises in conservative books and is headed by Mary Matalin, a long-time Republican operative and former aide to Vice President Dick Cheney. So far, some 475,000 copies of the book have been printed.

It has become an article of faith among Democrats that Mr Kerry lost to Mr Bush in 2004 because he failed to hit back against lies about his service record on America's Swift Boat patrol crafts in Vietnam. The term "to be Swift-Boated" - meaning to be smeared by Right-wingers - entered the political lexicon.

Mr Obama has been more aggressive in responding to internet rumours, particularly those falsely suggesting he is a Muslim. He has launched www.fightthesmears.com, a fact-checking website, and enlisted Mr Kerry himself to oversee a sister site called www.truthfightsback.com.

He has also learnt from his erstwhile Democratic rival Hillary Clinton, who perfected the art of responding to mildly hostile biographies of her by much more credible authors with full-frontal assaults on their integrity, sometimes even before the book was published.

The Obama campaign has encouraged journalists to report that Corsi posted a string of online comments in 2004 that questioned Mrs Clinton's sexuality.

Last year, Corsi, who has a PhD in political science from Harvard, published a book charging that President George W. Bush was secretly plotting to create a North American Union by merging the US with Canada and Mexico.

The notion that there is a hidden plan for a North American Union is a pet theory of a small band of fervent small-government conservatives.

I thought this was going to happen. I had the opportunity to have dinner with Dr, Corsi along with two other Constitution Party members, he was aware that he would be attacked. I thought he (Corsi) did well on Larry King the other night, he mentioned Chuck Baldwin and the Constitution Party (I believe) 3 or 4 times.

Here come the goons, right on schedule.

The "author," and I use the term loosely, whose vicious lies damaged John Kerry's 2004 presidential campaign has crawled back out from under his rock to spew vicious lies about Barack Obama. Right-wing radio talk-show hosts are dutifully transmitting this concocted venom. This presidential campaign has officially gotten ugly.

The "author" I'm talking about is a man named Jerome Corsi. In a book published last year, "The Late Great USA: The Coming Merger with Mexico and Canada," Corsi claimed that George W. Bush was at the heart of a secret conspiracy to subsume the United States into a post-national, one-worldish North American Union. Corsi's writings on far-right blogs have been even more paranoid and delusional. He has written that pedophilia, for which he used a more graphic term, "is OK with the Pope as long as it isn't reported by the liberal press." He has referred to Muslims as "ragheads."

Corsi would be known as just another visitor from the outer fringe if he had not been the co-author of "Unfit for Command," the book that slimed Kerry's exemplary record as a Swift boat commander in Vietnam. The allegations in that book were discredited, but not before they had been amplified by the right-wing echo chamber to the point where they raised questions in some voters' minds - perhaps enough to swing the election.

It was an abominable trick, but quite remarkable. Kerry's opponent, George W. Bush, had avoided Vietnam by taking refuge in the Texas Air National Guard. Kerry was a decorated war hero, yet somehow his valor and sense of duty were turned into a political negative and used against him.

Now Corsi, in what he acknowledges is an attempt "to keep Obama from getting elected," has come out with a book that similarly tries to turn one of Obama's strengths - his compelling life story - into a liability.

Corsi's new volume of vitriol, "The Obama Nation," seeks to smear Obama as a "leftist" and add fuel to the false and discredited rumor that he is secretly a radical Muslim, or at least has "extensive connections to Islam." The liberal Web site Media Matters has already demonstrated that the book is riddled with factual errors - for example, Corsi repeats the charge, thoroughly disproved, that Obama was in church for one of the Rev. Jeremiah Wright's most incendiary sermons. But the point isn't to tell the truth. The point is to repeat the lie and thus give it new life.

Corsi's dirty work is more difficult this time because Obama has already written his life story in the autobiographical "Dreams From My Father." Because he can't reveal anything about Obama's past, Corsi is reduced to reinterpretation - or, at times, invention.

It sounds like the kind of book that should quickly be consigned to the remainder bin, but - unsurprisingly - it is already a bestseller. The Washington Post and other news organizations have noted that this and similar anti-Obama books win the imprimatur of bestseller status by being "pushed by conservative book clubs that buy in bulk to drive up sales."

This time, though, somebody is pushing back: John Kerry, whose political action committee has launched a new Web site, called Truth Fights Back, to "fight against the right-wing smear machine." The site weighs in vigorously on behalf of several Democrats who are being hit with unfair attacks, but its most urgent campaign is "making sure Jerome Corsi doesn't get away with his lies unchallenged."

The Obama campaign faces a classic dilemma. If smear attacks are left unanswered, voters can get the impression that the lies are true. But there's no way to respond without giving the falsehoods wider circulation.

For Obama, this choice seems doubly fraught. Just look at the way Sen. John McCain's campaign jumped all over Obama when he predicted - correctly, it turns out - that Republicans would try to scare voters by making him seem alien and somehow frightening. His observation about not looking like previous presidents was opportunistically slammed by McCain and his surrogates as playing "the race card."

So far, the Obama campaign's reaction to the Corsi book has been fairly muted - in part because others, such as Kerry, have stepped up to give a more full-throated response. Kerry knows better than anyone what it feels like to be Swift-boated, and he's determined not to let it happen to anyone else.

Corsi ,an American truth-teller burned at the "media st

Obama is lying and Corsi is telling the truth...

Obama knows that Corsi is telling the truth....the truth-tellers in a corrupt society (like ours has become) are usually burdened at the stake in one shape or form….so Obama’s attack on Corsi is expected…..I had to laugh at some of the false accusations lodged at Corsi by “the Obamantaionâ€

Kevin James had Dr. Corsi on last night, VERY revealing, [a MUST LISTEN..! ], now via his archives in this thread here: www.alipac.us/ftopict-128192.html

I'm sure Dr. Corsi has been on MANY shows, Radio & TV..! O’Reilly’s getting to be too PC for his age, yet still did a number on Hussein, as did Hannity. Gallagher had Corsi on yesterday as well..! Didn’t get to see if Dobbs and/or Beck got to this, but uhh, they probably did, if they didn’t, they WILL..!

Let the TRUTH be told, and be done with it..!

Here's an op/ed piece that appeared in the LA Times today! Some interesting comments to say the least. Tim Rutten's comments or take on President Bush and mexico are laughable. What planet is this guy living on! We have 20-30 illegal invaders living in this country, (majority from mexico) a president who refuse to secure our borders, and yet Rutten has the audacity to criticize anyone who may question that relationship and or motive! I guess anyone who wants our borders secured and the laws enforced are now considered " are on the far-right hate fringe."

The fact that John Adams and Thomas Jefferson's famous friendship recovered from the acrimonious presidential campaigns of 1796 and 1800 is a monument to 18th century detachment and the mysterious power of genuine human fellowship.

From those first two contested general elections to the current presidential campaign, American politics have been a blood sport, and what we now call "negative advertising" always has been a weapon of choice. As any honest political consultant will tell you, there's a reason for that: Negative advertising works; it always has.

Even so, Jerome R. Corsi's controversial new book, "The Obama Nation: Leftist Politics and the Cult of Personality," occupies a class of its own. Corsi, you may recall, was the coauthor of "Unfit for Command: Swift Boat Veterans Speak Out Against John Kerry," the campaign diatribe that slimed the decorated Vietnam War veteran and then-Democratic presidential candidate's war record.

Corsi is frank about his motives for writing "The Obama Nation." As he told the New York Times this week: "The goal is to defeat Obama. I don't want Obama to be in office."

That's clear enough from the text. You can pretty well sum the whole thing up this way: The Democratic candidate is a deceitful jihadist drug addict who, if elected, plans to impose a black supremacist, socialist regime.

Obama's campaign learned from Kerry's experience, and you can go to its website to see a point-by-point, factual rebuttal of Corsi's book. Other organizations -- notably Media Matters -- have posted similar analyses. It's pretty convincing stuff, not least because Corsi so frequently refers to the Illinois senator's own books and almost invariably gets it wrong.

What's far more interesting is how somebody like Corsi suddenly becomes a player in a presidential campaign. Start with the fact that the author isn't a conservative in the normal or respectable sense of that word. He's actually a regular on the far-right, hate fringe of Internet journalism, whose day job seems to be as a correspondent for a new extreme right-wing site, where he specializes in stories about how George W. Bush is conspiring to eliminate the border between the United States and Mexico. (You really can't make this stuff up.) The project he put aside to write his anti-Obama screed was an expose of all the secrets about 9/11 your government still is keeping from you.

If the music you seem to hear playing in the background sounds familiar, it's because ... yes, you've crossed over into the Twilight Zone.

Actually, it's a little darker than that. Corsi doesn't just belong to the right's conspiratorial wing, he belongs to its racist, white-supremacist fringe. Over the last couple of years, he's written disparagingly about Muslims, Catholics and Jews, not to mention gays and lesbians. Muslims are "ragheads," the pope is "senile" and tolerates "boy bumping," and Jews ... well, you can imagine. Corsi looked beleaguered but respectable this week when he appeared on CNN's "Larry King Live," but it would be far more instructive if his prospective readers could hear him Sunday, when he's scheduled to appear on "The Political Cesspool," a "pro-white" radio program that endorses the so-called neo-Confederate movement's belief that secession is the right of every American state, promotes the notion that "the United States is a Christian nation" and "opposes all efforts to mix the races of mankind."

Let's see ... Barack Obama's father was ... and his mother was ... hmmm.

The Southern Poverty Law Center has referred to the show and its host, James Edwards, as "the nexus of hate in America." Holocaust deniers are welcome guests. When the indefatigable Anti-Defamation League drew attention to Edwards' programming, he labeled it "America's most powerful hate group." According to Edwards' depiction of the ADL, a "neo-Nazi [is] any white person who disagrees with a Jew" and an "anti-Semite [is] any non-Jewish white person."

Interesting company for an author who aspires to participate in an American presidential election. The fact of the matter is, though, that Corsi doesn't so much aspire to participate as he does to profit.

That brings us to one of the primary differences between that bitterly contested election of 1796 and this one. In former years, Americans' ideology was influenced by their participation in the economy. To put it crudely, businesspeople tended to find a home in the Republican Party, working men and women in the Democratic Party. Today, we have a new class, one to which Corsi and his ilk belong, whose business is their ideology.

"The Obama Nation" was written and printed because major American publishing houses have decided that there's money to be made in funding right-wing boutique imprints modeled after the Washington-based Regnery, which has made a small fortune stoking the hard-right furnace with combustible prose. Corsi's book is published by Threshold Editions, a division of Simon & Schuster, which hired right-wing political operative Mary Matalin to edit the imprint. Random House has a similar imprint in Crown Forum, and Penguin Group USA has Sentinel. Their business model -- and this is all about business -- is predicated on the existence of an echo chamber of right-wing radio and television shows willing to promote these publishers' products -- however noxious. Beyond that is a network of conservative book clubs and organizations willing to place the sort of advance bulk orders for controversial books that will guarantee them a place on the bestseller lists.

It's just that sort of order that made "The Obama Nation" No. 1 on Sunday's New York Times bestseller list, and essentially "laundered" Corsi onto the respectable broadcast media's guest list.

I would say if the book shot to the top, there is a lot of concerned Americans, and there should be, with either of the candidates from the Demacate as well as the Republican party.......I agree Chuck Baldwin looks the best.
