    Mr. Gates comes to Washington with a plea for smart foreigners [3/19/06]
    Being the richest man on earth hasn't slowed Bill Gates in his energetic pursuit of job displacement for American computer workers by importing still more foreigners in the H-1B visa program. (The recent Forbes billionaires issue stated that Gates has a net worth of $50 billion, up $6 billion from last year.)

    WASHINGTON --When the Senate comes back to work next week, it is scheduled to take up the issue of immigration. And that is what brought Bill Gates to Washington for a rare visit last week.
    The Microsoft billionaire does not love this capital, but he decided to add his personal voice to his Washington office's lobbying effort to expand the number of foreign-born computer scientists allowed to work in this country under a special program known as H1B visas.
    In an interview sandwiched between his meetings on Capitol Hill, Gates told me that the "high-skills immigration issue is by far the No. 1 thing" on the Washington agenda for Microsoft and for the electronics industry generally. "This is gigantic for us."
    Since autumn 2003, Congress has limited the number of people admitted annually on H1B visas to 65,000. To qualify for such a visa, a person must have at least a bachelor's degree and specialized knowledge and a job offer from an American employer. The visa is generally good for six years, with the possibility of applying for extensions.
    So great is the demand for such skills in the burgeoning high-tech world that in August 2005, the last of the visas available for fiscal 2006 were issued. That means a 14-month shutdown of the program, until October of this year.
    Meanwhile, the number of computer science majors is "falling fast" in America. Students are merely responding to the reality of the marketplace, and don't want to pursue an expensive degree for several years which will quickly become worthless. Then industry brazenly complains that there aren't enough American IT workers and it must have immigrants, even though it created the situation.

    That's 65,000 new arrivals per year. They get to stay for 6 years, and longer if they "forget to return home to Bangalore."

    To qualify for such a visa, a person must have at least a bachelor's degree and specialized knowledge and a job offer from an American employer.
    To qualify, they need only be a Tata employee with faked credentials.

    Total BS. The so-called "skill shortage" is fabricated by Microsoft, Dell, and HP. If companies would discontinue AGE DISCRIMINATION, every vacancy could be filled many times over.

    Because priority of hire goes to Bangalore, India. A student's worst enemy is his US citizenship. This is the "downward spiral, and Microsoft and Dell are major causes of this!

    Hats off to ya, Huey Gunner! John Cornyn, Teddy Kennedy, John McCain, Spector, Hillary, Lamar Smith, and other ultra-left LIBERAL anti-American Republicans and Democrats have done is turn the constitution inside out. They look at it (as I believe another Alipac member already pointed out) as applying to foreign nationals. They see us citizens as the bad guys.

    Even the Russians must be rolling their eyeballs back in disbelief. Would cold war former USSR have believed the USA could "poison" itself like this?

    If Bill Gates wants more foreign labor, why doesn't he pay for it himself? How about Bill Gates pays for their education, health care and the social services that they consume during their long stay here along with paying them a fair wage? Come on, if all things being equal does anyone honestly think these greedy employers would be pushing for unlimited foreign labor if they knew they had to treat them like they treat an American worker? Bill Gates is a greedy, rotten, hypocritical, money grubbing criminal. He lied, cheated and stole his way to the top and now he's trying to steal from us what is rightfully ours. Just how much did Bill pump into the coffers of Jorge Bush the last few years? These employers like Bill Gates deserve to be wearing an orange jump suit, not the suit they wear now.

    Heaven knows Bill Gates can afford good American workers. There are plenty that would line up to have a chance to work for him. This man could probably afford to give the entire American population a job, with money left over. See what money does to people sometimes? The more they have, the stingier they get.

    Seems to me that if Bill Gates cared anything about this country at all he could be calling for Americans he could send to school to take the jobs he is trying to import foreigners to do. Free school in exchange for a years work or something.

    Some cities who pay less in wages than they should for whatever reason to police men, nurses, etc, often give free training in exchange for a year or two of work. The Federal government gives education loans in exchange for a couple of years military service. Why is Bill Gates so un-american that he couldn't think of that option?
