A quarter-century ago, an encounter with dozens of undocumented immigrants living in caves and cardboard shelters transformed a marketing specialist for a hotel chain.
Enrique Morones saw them make tents out of tarps and tree branches. He heard them talk about long days of work as gardeners, fruit pickers, construction workers — and sometimes not getting paid. Before the trip, which he made with a church group, Morones never knew there were migrants struggling to survive in the canyons of Carlsbad.
