Border Fence Prevents Drug Smuggling Attempt in Arizona
(Tuesday, June 02, 2009)
Tucson, Ariz. - A drug smuggler’s attempt on Monday to drive his truck over a vehicle barrier by using a ramp proved unsuccessful.
Agents from the Border Patrol’s Casa Grande Station were patrolling the border near San Miguel, when they discovered a pickup truck trapped on top of the vehicle barrier located in that area. The truck apparently became stuck when a smuggler attempting to use a ramp to drive over the barrier, drove off the ramp and his front wheels became wedged between the ramp rails.
A Border Patrol canine team responded to the scene and alerted to the presence of narcotics. Agents searched the vehicle and identified a concealed compartment underneath the bed of the truck. Inside the compartment agents found 22 bundles of marijuana weighing approximately 314 pounds with an estimated street value of $251,200. The vehicle, ramps and marijuana were seized. The marijuana was transferred over to the Drug Enforcement Administration.
Pedestrian and vehicle barriers have proven to be successful in consistently deterring and delaying attempted illegal cross-border incursions. Through the deployment of additional personnel, tactical infrastructure, and technology, the Border Patrol has made great strides in gaining control of our borders and preventing smugglers illegal access into the United States.
As the Border Patrol continues its coordinated enforcement operations, drug cartel organizations are finding it increasingly difficult to transport narcotics into our country.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation's borders at and between the official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.
