A source operating under the umbrella of Customs and Border Protection (CBP) revealed to Breitbart Texas that shots were fired from the Mexican side of the Rio Grande, the river that separates Texas from Mexico. The shots were intended for a U.S. Border Patrol agent or agents and one or more agents returned fire across the border. No injuries are reported, according to the source.

The source told Breitbart Texas that the incident occurred near Rio Grande City, Texas, a small town along the U.S.-Mexico border.

The U.S.-Mexico border in near Rio Grande City does not have a consistent wall or fence of any type. The only physical barrier is the Rio Grande itself, a shallow river that is crossed with ease. The region south of the border in that area is controlled by a faction of the Mexican Gulf Cartel, specifically the Los Metros faction of the Gulf Cartel.

The Los Metros faction of the Gulf Cartel is controlled by “Comandante Toro,” whose real name is Julian Loisa Salinas. The area where the shooting incident occurred is believed to be controlled by a faction of that faction, whose commander is aligned with “Comandante Toro.”

A South Texas television outlet first reported that shots had been fired at U.S. Border Patrol agents along the Rio Grande, though no other information was provided. In a post on the Facebook page of KRGV television, the news outlet posted “Breaking: Shots were fired at Border Patrol along the river, just east of Rio Grande City.”
