Border Patrol agents arrest 10 unauthorized immigrants in La Jolla

    Karen Kucher Contact Reporter

Border Patrol agents spotted a smuggling boat heading toward the coast early Wednesday and arrested 10 unauthorized immigrants at a La Jolla intersection, authorities said.

Nine men and one woman who had come ashore near Windansea Beach on a panga were arrested at the intersection of Camino d la Costa and Winamar Avenue, about a block from the water, around 12:15 a.m., Border Patrol spokesman Theron Francisco said.

Those arrested were all Mexican citizens.

Francisco said the panga was picked up by surveillance. He didn’t know if the vessel was spotted by stationary cameras along the coast or from aircraft or a boat.

Border Patrol agents are processing the immigrants.

Anyone who has a criminal history could face charges.

The rest will be processed for removal from the U.S., Francisco said.

The panga was to be removed from the beach later Wednesday morning.

Pangas are low-profile boats with outboard motors used by fishermen in Mexico. They often are used by smugglers who bring people and drugs into the country.

Been awhile since we read about panga boats. Awhile back it seemed more common or maybe it's just not reported about much nowadays.

They are often used off California's coast. We have numerous articles on them, here are a couple examples:

Thank you Jean. It's like a big flat-bottomed row boat with a motor?! I found some pics and that's kinda what they looked like.

Once loaded on to the trailer the boat was taken as evidence for ICE.

L-r, Tow Boat employees Casey Fodo and Josh Nidzieko worked to center the boat on the trailer.

Employees of TowBoat US, who has a contract with the Federal Government to remove boats abandoned during human or drug smuggling cases, earned their money Wednesday when they were called to remove a Mexican Fishing Panga from the beach at Windansea in La Jolla that had carried 10 people to the US from Mexico. The boat came ashore where nine men and one woman were taken in to custody soon after they came ashore.
