A convicted sex offender was nabbed trying to illegally cross the United States border from Mexico this weekend, authorities announced Monday.
The unidentified 22-year-old Mexican citizen-- who had previously been deported-- was among a group of 11 trying to enter the States who were found at around 11 p.m. Sunday, approximately 29 miles west of Calexico, according to Jonathan Creiglow of U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
Border agents didn't realize the man's history until they were running records checks on his identity, which revealed his previous charges out of Santa Ana for lewd and lascivious acts with a minor under the age of 16, according to Creiglow.
As of Monday, the man was being held by the U.S. Border Patrol, awaiting federal prosecution charges, Creiglow said.
