ICE arrests 32 in Nebraska, 23 in Iowa in Midwest operation

Federal law enforcement authorities last week arrested 32 people in Nebraska and 23 in Iowa during an operation that targeted criminal immigrants, those who have re-entered the country illegally and immigration fugitives.

The arrests in those states were among 86 arrests of foreign nationals by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents last week in the Midwest, the agency said. Beyond Nebraska and Iowa, the arrests were made in Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota during a three-day targeted operation. The operation ended March 9, and ICE announced the arrests on Wednesday.

Among the people arrested in Omaha was a 35-year-old Mexican national who was convicted as an illegal alien possessing a firearm and a 33-year-old Salvadoran national who had been convicted of assault and battery, disorderly conduct, carrying a concealed weapon and possessing marijuana.

Of the 86 people ICE arrested in the Midwest, 52 had prior criminal convictions in addition to their illegal immigration status, the agency said. Another 10 were lawful permanent residents with criminal convictions.

Of the total, 23 had been previously removed from the United States and later illegally re-entered.
