Every day at the U.S.-Mexico border in San Ysidro can bring a different experience for agents working to protect the country's security. Every now and then, agents make a nice catch.

Such was the case last weekend, as Jeffrey Berrouet, 23, who was wanted on murder charges in this country, was taken into custody after walking across the border.

Berrouet, who had an arrest warrant in his name for his alleged participation in the June 2008 robbery, kidnapping, torture and slaying of Robert Mastrangelo, 24, of San Bernardino, gave an agent a California driver's license and declared he was a U.S. citizen.

After checking Berrouet's identity, agents arrested the man when it was determined he had a warrant and was considered armed and dangerous. A warrant had also been issued for Berrouet for reportedly having a controlled substance on his person.

While not all those taken into custody at this border post and others between here and Mexico and here and Canada are that dangerous, it is nice to know that a number of people who should not be walking the streets are being apprehended trying to slip into the country.

On the flip side, we know that a number do slip in and can present a problem for authorities here.

In light of the nearly $800 billion stimulus package that President Barack Obama is slated to sign on Tuesday, this is one citizen who hopes the 44th President does not forget our brave men and women working to secure our borders.

Providing more funding for such work has never been more important and necessary.
