LAS CRUCES - A convicted felon was arrested in Alamogordo on Monday, shortly after he was released from his stay in prison, the Border Patrol announced Tuesday.

Border Patrol Agents from the Alamogordo station assisted the Lincoln County Adult Probation Office in Ruidoso in identifying Jesus Avalos-Tinoco, 36, of Mexico, who was reporting for the first time to his parole officer.

During questioning, the agents discovered that Avalos-Tinoco had been arrested in 2010 by New Mexico State Police on a charge of criminal sexual contact with a minor. Through a plea bargain, Avalos was convicted of and served time for two lesser felony charges.

Avalos, who had been formally removed from the United States in 2004, illegally re-entered the United States in 2009 and is now being detained at the Otero County Prison Facility awaiting criminal prosecution and removal from the United States.
