Border Patrol says increased security leads to fewer apprehensions

EL PASO — Despite the dangers, undocumented immigrants are still sneaking across the border in search of a better life. However, the U.S. Border Patrol said an unprecedented effort to beef up security is making a difference.

There are more agents than at any time in history patrolling the border, and they have more help in the field from National Guard troops and technology.

Increased enforcement seems to be working as a deterrent for immigrants, who now find it's harder than ever to slip across the border. Many of those we talked to in recent months who've been caught by the Border Patrol said they're reluctant to try again.

The number of apprehensions is down nationwide. Even Arizona, a hotspot for illegal crossings, reports a 10 percent drop in apprehensions.

Early in the year, Texas experienced a surge in undocumented immigration, but now it has tapered off.

"We've been able to increase the number of agents, the amount of technology, the amount of infrastructure, and, of course, the recent acquisition of the National Guard in a support capacity," said Doug Mosier, with the U.S. Border Patrol.

Smugglers have struggled to adapt, with some taking a wait-and-see approach. The only question is for how long.

The border patrol is set to release final figures for the recent fiscal year. California was the only border state where the number of undocumented immigrants caught increased.

Wow, enforcement reduces the number of illegals coming over. What a novel idea.
