SAN YSIDRO – A woman was arrested when she tried to drive an SUV across the border with drugs inside the tires, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials announced Wednesday.

The 20-year-old woman, a U.S. citizen registered in the SENTRI trusted traveler program, drove up to the border about 10 p.m. Tuesday in a Buick Rendezvous. A canine alerted agents to the vehicle and an X-ray in secondary inspection showed something inside three tires, agents said.

The tires were removed, and 15 wrapped packages containing 66 pounds of marijuana were found, with an estimated value of about $40,000, agents said.

The woman was in custody on suspicion of drug smuggling.
