    (07-17) 04:33 PDT Los Angeles (AP) --

Two young boys remained hospitalized Monday after being struck by a bullet and police were looking for an area gang member that they believe was the shooter.

Three-year-old Jeremy Hernandez was standing in a crowd in the city's Boyle Heights section Saturday night when a bullet hit his wrist then lodged in the stomach of his 6-year-old brother James Saturday night in the city's Boyle Heights section, police said.

James was in critical condition and Jeremy was in stable condition at White Memorial Adventist Hospital.

Police identified the shooting suspect Sunday as Mauricio Alejandro Jimenez, 26, who authorities said is a member of the Boyle Heights-based Tiny Boys gang.

Jimenez was deported to Mexico four months ago after serving more than a year in prison on weapons and gang-related charges.

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and police officials appealed to Boyle Heights residents Sunday to help track down Jimenez. Villaraigosa said Jimenez's prison sentence had been too light, and the shooting represented a failure of the local justice system.

This is indicative of why we have to secure the borders deporting criminals so they can be back within a week to commit more crimes before being caught again is ridiculous. These poor victims, it is all so unnecessary and preventable.
Freedom isn't free... Don't forget the men who died and gave that right to all of us....

Police Search for Suspect Who Shot Two Young Boys

LOS ANGELES, July 16, 2006 - Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa joined police Sunday in asking for the public assistance to find a Boyle Heights gang member who shot a 3-year-old boy and his 6-year-old brother.

"A crime like this strikes at the heart of parents and residents," said Villaraigosa at a news conference outside LAPD's Parker Center headquarters. "We are hoping the sheer senselessness of this crime will spur anyone with information as to the whereabouts of the shooter to contact the police."

The shooting happened outside an apartment building at 414 N. Saint Louis St. around 9:35 last night, said Los Angeles police Detective Bill Eagleson of the Hollenbeck Station.

Maurcio Alejandro Jimenez, who goes by "Spyder," was on the east side of the apartment drinking beer and rum, when he pulled a handgun from his waistband and fired a shot in the direction of the victims, Eagleson said.

Jimenez did not appear to be targeting the boys, who were playing in a driveway while attending a birthday party, said Eagleson, but the bullet went through the wrist of Jeremy Hernandez, 3, and lodged in the stomach of his brother, James Hernandez, 6.

The boys' stepfather rushed them to White Memorial Medical-Adventist, where James was listed in critical condition.

    Jeremy's vital signs were stable.

Jimenez, who was recently released from prison, is an active member of the Tiny Boys, a Boyle Heights gang, fled after the shooting.

Los Angeles City Councilman Jose Huizar, who lives two blocks from the shootings, also called for public assistance, saying crime should not be tolerated.

"I first want to call for prayers for the two young victims," he said, "We must do what we can to get this person so the police can do what they need to do."

Jimenez made his way back into the United States after being deported to Mexico upon his release from prison in March, after spending 15 months of a two year sentence for murdering an apartment manager, said Eagleson.

According to police, he does not have a residence in the area. Villaraigosa said that although violent crimes continue to decline in Los Angeles, the U.S. justice system was "broken" and that Jimenez' two year sentence for a murder conviction did not pass his "smell test."

"These crimes put a chill up your spine," he said, "and although we've seen a rash of these kinds of shootings, crime is down 7 percent from last year."

Over the last five years violent crime had declined 40 percent, said Villaraigosa.

"But this is of little solace to families of victims," he said, "but we are committed to doing what we can to get 1/8crime 3/8 further down."

Eagleson said Jimenez faces a slew of charges related to the shootings, including added federal penalties due to his illegal re-entry into the country.

Anyone with more information as to the whereabouts of Jimenez is asked to call detectives at the Hollenbeck Station, (323) 266-5949.

I feel really bad for the families of these kids. Does this mayor really think anybody is going to tell him anything?

And where is the outrage for young Jordin Paulder (age 9) who was axed in the head in Sandy Springs, GA?

When are the government officials going to wake up and smell the coffee?

Why is it considered "racist" when so many of these atrocities are perpetrated by South of the Border citizens?
