BP In California Seizes More Than 3 Tons of Marijuana

Calexico, Calif. - Border Protection officers at the Calexico commercial facility detained a Mexicali man after they discovered about 6,200 pounds of marijuana hidden in a tractor-trailer rig that entered the port Friday afternoon, officials announced today.

The 23-year-old driver entered the commercial compound in a 1992 International tractor-trailer with a shipment manifested as plastic vacuum parts. The primary officer referred the tractor-trailer to the port’s non-invasive gamma ray inspection system.

When CBP officers observed anomalies in gamma ray images of the cargo, they ordered the shipment to be unloaded. Officers discovered 40 boxes containing 320 wrapped packages of marijuana commingled within the shipment of merchandise.

Total street value of the marijuana is about $3.7 million.

The driver was taken into custody by ICE enforcement agents and booked into the Imperial County jail. He is awaiting prosecution by the U.S. Attorney’s office on federal drug smuggling charges.
