A BRAVE MISSISSIPPI SHERIFF TAKES ACTION
Sheriff Ronnie Pennington, another guy with guts can be reached at
601-825-1480
Reported in Clarion Ledger newspaper, Jackson, Mississippi, August 24, 2007 and on WLBT, channel 3,
SHERIFF PENNINGTON DID EVERYTHING RIGHT, THANK HIM, AND LET YOUR LOCAL SHERIFF KNOW WHAT YOU EXPECT OF HIM.
The owner of a Rankin County trailer park where one died and three were wounded in fight Monday, will shut it down.
The park is on Mattie Burnett Circle, just off Fannin Landing Circle on the north shore of the reservoir. A total of 16 illegal aliens were living there. Three people are arrested for murder, aggravated assault, kidnapping and burglary.
Sheriff Ronnie Pennington gave the owner a deal that he would not be arrested or named if he would agree to padlock the trailer park, which was in deplorable condition. The illegals have been deported, and the sheriff says he is serving notice that anybody who is hiring illegal aliens, or allowing them to live on their property, has 30 days to make them leave.

All right Sheriff Pennington. It is a sad day when a lawman that understands AND enforces the law is unique.

WHAT'S NEXT
Anthony Perez, 23, of Brandon, Corey Sims, 19, of Braxton and Jason Lee Flores, 16, of Brandon will have a preliminary hearing before Rankin County Judge Kent McDaniel on Tuesday.
The Rankin County mobile home park where two men were shot and another man was beaten this week has been shut down.
One of the men shot later died in the hospital.
There are more than a dozen units on the littered grounds of the property near the Ross Barnett Reservoir. Late Thursday evening, it was hard to tell which - if any - mobile homes were being occupied. All are run down, with some without basic utilities. More than 20 people had been living in the mobile homes.
Rankin County Sheriff Ronnie Pennington said he spoke Thursday morning with a representative for the mobile home park's owner, who promised to close off the property.
"I told him it was the right thing to do," Pennington said. The owner will not face criminal charges and did not know undocumented workers were renting the mobile homes, he said.
The sheriff would not disclose the name of the owner. However, county land records show the park lies on two parcels between Fannin Landing Circle and Mattie Burnett Circle and is owned by the Burnett family.
A woman who answered the telephone at the home of one landowner, Willie Burnett, would not identify herself or answer questions related to the property. Calls to the other landowner, Sharon Burnett Bell, were not returned.
The sheriff said a fence would be constructed around the property and padlocked by the owner. But by late Thursday, the enclosure amounted to two posts and a gate erected at the mouth of a rocky, dirt road leading into the park. The gate was gaping open.
The remaining one or two residents will have 30 days to find a place to live, Pennington said. He also said he sent animal control to to pick up several stray dogs.
The three men, including one of the suspects, were injured Monday night at the park. Authorities suspect the disturbance stemmed from a previous altercation.
One man who was shot later died in the hospital; the man who was beaten remains in an intensive-care unit in stable, but critical, condition. Pennington would not disclose their names or locations because he said not all of their family members have been notified.
Anthony Perez, 23, of Brandon, Corey Sims, 19, of Braxton and Jason Lee Flores, 16, of Brandon have been charged with capital murder, aggravated assault, kidnapping and burglary. They have been at the Rankin County Jail without bond since Tuesday.
Sims was shot in the leg during the altercation.
Flores may be represented by a Rankin County public defender, while Perez and Sims indicated in court records they may hire private attorneys.
Flores' mother, Monica Flores, has been charged in the case as an accessory. She was still in jail as of Thursday evening.
Pennington said he thinks a dispute Saturday night between residents at the mobile home park and the suspects led to the shooting.
"Officers were called out for a disturbance on Saturday night, but when they found out the officers were coming, they broke it up. We think they (the suspects) came back Monday night to finish it up," he said.
Pennington would not say what types of guns were used but said the shooting occurred inside one of the residences as well as on the park grounds.
One suspect, Perez, has a criminal record. In February 2002, he was convicted in Rankin County of burglarizing a nonresidential building and an automobile. He's on probation. Pennington said he does not know whether Perez will face additional charges.
Following the shooting, deputies rounded up 14 people at the park for questioning. All were Hispanic, and most spoke only Spanish.
Deputies are working with local Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to deport seven who were found to be undocumented workers. Pennington said he is holding another six to be deported.
"We had a translator, and we asked them one by one if they were here legally. Only one said (he was here) legally and provided a birth certificate and valid ID," Pennington said.
Rankin Ledger staff writers Mark Bonner and Chris Liuzza contributed to this report.
