Brazilian man found in Billerica charged with federal immigration crime

BOSTON -- A Brazilian national who was found in Billerica by law enforcement more than a decade after previously being deported was charged with a federal immigration crime on Thursday.

Josilei DeCastro, also known as both Marcos Santos and Marcos Augusto Dos Santos, 37, was charged in federal court in Boston with illegally re-entering the United States after being deported, U.S. attorneys announced in a press release.

DeCastro had been previously deported on July 17, 2000, attorneys said in the release. On Dec. 6, 2016, law enforcement allegedly located him in Billerica and determined he was in the country illegally, according to the release.

He faces a sentence of up to two years in prison, one year of supervised release and a fine of $250,000, according to the release. DeCastro will be subject to deportation once he completes his sentence.

Acting U.S. Attorney William D. Weinreb announced the case along with Matthew J. Etre, Special Agent in Charge of Homeland Security Investigations in Boston. The case will be prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Suzanne Sullivan, who works in Weinreb's Major Crimes Unit.

What is this "one year of supervised release"? Release him in his country.
