Bribed U.S. Official Frees Violent Illegal Immigrants

Bribed U.S. Official Frees Violent Illegal Immigrants
    Wed, 09/17/2008 - 14:27 — Judicial Watch Blog

A high-ranking immigration official guilty of taking bribes to release illegal immigrants with criminal records—including one who committed murder after being freed—will only get a maximum sentence of three years in prison.

The former director of detention and removal in the Detroit office of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) accepted thousands of dollars, gifts and favors from immigration attorneys in exchange for the release of clients facing deportation.

At least two of the illegal immigrants freed were registered sex offenders and one murdered a college student less than a year after the crooked ICE official (Roy Bailey) let him go. Bailey also conspired with a fugitive, believed to be in Lebanon, who needed to get employees of his Middle Eastern restaurants residency based on fraudulent marriages to American women.

This week Bailey pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit bribery, conspiracy to defraud the United States and failing to report a felony. Sentencing is scheduled for the end of November and, incredibly, he’ll get no more than 37 months in prison and possibly a $75,000 fine.

The sentence seems laughable for a 20-year government employee who repeatedly compromised national security as well as public safety. Surely, the victims of the released illegal immigrants must consider it insulting.
