Bush gives $500 million to Mexicans for drug war

Bush gives $500 million to Mexicans for drug war
But allows trucks from south of border said to play major role in trafficking

The White House is announcing the first part of a military assistance program to Mexico to help its military fight drug cartels at the same time the Department of Transportation is pressing ahead to allow 100 Mexican trucking companies run long-haul rigs in the U.S. without restriction.

WND has reported a Drug Enforcement Administration report this year confirmed Mexican commercial drivers play a major role in the country's drug cartel traffic into the U.S.

The White House included as part of the Iraq Supplemental Funding Request sent to Congress today an unprecedented $500 million for Mexico and $50 million for Central American countries to combat transnational crime and drug smuggling.

The White House confirmed the requested $500 million was part of a $1.4 billion program President Bush has discussed to fund "security cooperation" with Mexico.

WND has reported the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has now certified five Mexican trucking companies to participate in the cross-border demonstration project, despite an overwhelming vote in the House and Senate to remove funds for the project from the Department of Transportation's 2008 appropriations bill.

Today's White House announcement acknowledged Bush and Mexican President Calderon have discussed on many occasions the importance of the U.S. and Mexico working together in a program of military assistance to fight the Mexican drug war raging across the U.S. border.

Reuters reported the $500 million package was aimed at assisting the 25,000 Mexican military troops Calderon has dispatched since December to fight the drug cartels, especially in northeastern Mexico where in Nuevo Laredo the drug war has caused a surge in drug-related murders.

WND previously reported U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Antonio O. Garza Jr. was engaged in discussions with the Calderon government about a comprehensive U.S. plan of military assistance to combat the Mexican drug cartels.

Rep. Henry Cuellar, D-Texas, also has confirmed to WND his discussions with Ambassador Garza about the need to assist Mexico in preventing the drug war in Nuevo Laredo from spilling across to his congressional district, which includes Laredo, Texas.

On Aug. 21, at the final press conference of the third North American Security and Prosperity Partnership summit meeting, Bush responded to a question by affirming Mexico's drug trade is a continental problem and would demand a continental solution.

"We discussed a common strategy to deal with a common problem, and that is narco-trafficking and violence on our border," Bush told reporters in Montebello, Quebec, Canada. "The United States is committed to this joint strategy to deal with a joint problem. I would not be committed to dealing with this if I wasn't convinced that President Calderon had the will and desire to protect his people from narco-traffickers."

The $500 million included for Mexico in the Iraq Supplemental Funding Request did not specify any direct U.S. military force presence in Mexico, nor did the announcement specify how the yet-to-be-announced remainder of the contemplated $1.4 expenditure would be allocated.

U.S. agents fired at on Mexico border

    September 7, 2007

By Jerry Seper - U.S. law-enforcement authorities were confronted by gunfire from automatic weapons as they chased and caught a drug-smuggling suspect in west Texas trying to flee back into Mexico, the Hudspeth County Sheriff's Office said yesterday.

No one was hurt and the gunmen were not identified, although the area has been the scene of similar incidents over the past several months, including a confrontation in January when heavily armed men in Mexican military uniforms fired on Texas officers with a .50-caliber machine gun mounted on the back of a camouflaged Humvee.

The men were identified at the time by Hudspeth County Sheriff Arvin West as "soldiers."

In the latest incident, a 33-year-old Mexican national was caught Wednesday morning by U.S. Border Patrol agents and Hudspeth County sheriff's deputies after officials said he abandoned 1,083 pounds of marijuana in an SUV near the U.S.-Mexico border after hitting tire spikes set up by agents on a dirt road near Fort Hancock, Texas.

It's not clear if the gunfire was aimed at the U.S. law-enforcement officers, but Sheriff West ordered the area cleared and began a search for the gunmen south of the capture site by seven of his deputies. He said it was determined that the gunfire had come from the Mexican side of border.

In the January incident, Hudspeth County deputies pursued three SUVs back to Mexico after spotting them driving north from the Rio Grande. The pursuit ended on the U.S. side of the border when the deputies encountered 10 heavily armed men in what Sheriff West described as battle-dress uniforms.

At that time, deputies found 1,400 pounds of marijuana in one of the vehicles abandoned after it blew a tire early in the pursuit. Another made it into Mexico and a third got stuck in the Rio Grande and was burned by the "soldiers" after it was unloaded.

In November, the Border Patrol chased a dump truck full of marijuana in the same area when it also got stuck in the river while trying to return to Mexico. While agents sought to unload 3 tons of marijuana, the driver — who had fled — returned with a heavily armed group of men wearing Mexican military uniforms and carrying military-style weapons.

The soldiers backed the agents away and bulldozed the truck back into Mexico.

Sheriff West said in the latest incident, Border Patrol agents were ordered not to engage unknown gunman on the Texas-Mexico border after the foot pursuit and capture, and left the area before the search by his deputies began.

But Border Patrol spokesman Douglas Mosier in El Paso, Texas, said agents tracked the marijuana load out of Mexico, sought to stop the vehicle when it entered the U.S., pursued the suspected smuggler and apprehended him. He said the agents, who also heard the gunfire, left the area only after it was secured.

Since 1996, there have been of 216 confirmed incursions by the Mexican military into the U.S.

We keep giving money to Mexico to fight drugs and the drugs continue to flow into this country. The money should have been given to Homeland Security for more control of the border.
More drugs than ever is being moved across the border.
Giving money to Mexico for anything is useless.

Sooooo, when does everyone get to see pictures of Calderon's new ranch, vehicles, and other trappings of an ill-gotten wealth?

War on drugs? Yeah........the money will more than likely be used to upgrade the smugglers' operations and weaponry.

Why doesn't Bush just drop the charade and come right out and say who's side he's really on?
