People worried about immigration doing more than talking

06:51 PM CST on Monday, November 13, 2006

By Nancy Holland / 11 News

Some local people worried about illegal immigration and drugs coming across the Texas border are doing more than talk about their complaints.

They are behind an effort to take to the air and patrol four remote counties in far West Texas.

Some people are hoping this will become something of an unofficial Texas Air Force.

People with concerns about immigration are taking to the air.
“It’s got the glass doors, glass windows in the back,” said Woody Lesikar, airport manager, Westside Airport.

Just after Thanksgiving a group of sheriffs along the Texas border will get the keys. The plane will patrol four counties.

Paid for by $100,000 in privately raised money, it will have a very public purpose.

“Usually they’ll fly at or below 500 foot above the ground,” Lesikar.

Lesikar flew us along the Brazos, showing us what a pilot and deputy sheriff will be able to do.

“You can really tell if somebody is fixing to cross the border,” said Lesikar.

They fly low and slow looking for people crossing illegally, as well as people hauling drugs.

“By giving them this asset they think they can catch more drugs and if they only increase their catch maybe five per cent more of what’s coming through, the assets they would seize, cars trucks whatever, would be sold at auction that would pay for this plane,” radio talk show host Edd Hendee.

Because private money is behind this, the people who had the idea say the federal government can’t direct it or cut funding.

We talked with both the DEA and the Border Patrol today and while they were quick to point out they have no official connection to this, neither do they have any objections.

If this gift to local sheriffs works, the people who have raised the money plan on four more planes for the borde

Plane on border group’s wish list

    Eyes on the Border.

That’s the name of new effort to raise $100,000 to buy a plane — equipped with infrared surveillance technology and state-of-the-art communications equipment — and give it to the sheriffs in two West Texas counties to help crack down on illegal immigration and drug trafficking.

“The federal government is failing to meet its border-control obligations,” according to a statement about the program on the Web site of KVCE/1160 AM, owned by Dan Patrick, a conservative Houston radio host and state senator-elect. “In Texas, this has had the effect of putting small numbers of country sheriffs in the position of being the front line of law enforcement along our part of the Mexican border.

“Our guys are smart and brave — but they are out-spent, out-gunned and out-manned. Eyes on the Border aims to alter this reality.”

Some say plans to curb immigration should be handled at a national level, not in states or cities.

“We don’t want 50 different states having 50 different rules,” former U.S. Sen. John B. Breaux, D-La, said during a policy briefing at a separate event Monday. “With the new Congress, it should be easier for the president to get something passed.”

Even so, the radio station — which teamed up with KSEV/700 AM in Houston for this effort — said it has clear goals, starting with this grassroots initiative to help law enforcers gain control of the border.

The stations hope to buy the plane and outfit it with communications and surveillance equipment that will allow volunteer pilots to maintain contact with law enforcers on the ground and allow a nighttime patrol over a 200-mile radius.

Hudspeth and Culberson counties will be the base of operations and sheriffs there have already signed on to the project, according to the statement.

Enough money may be raised for a second plane with vehicles and property seized by sheriffs catching drug-runners, radio officials say.

“The best part is, not a single penny comes from the government — so they can’t tell us what to do and they can’t stop us,” according to KVCE. “No bureaucrats. No empty promises from Congress. No political correctness.

    GO TEXAS!!

Texas our largest border state take us home because "Where Texas Goes, So Does The Nation"!

And God Bless the people who contributed the $100,000 to buy the plane.

America is Awake and Americans are Ready to do whatever it takes by all means necessary to stop illegal immigration and this foreing invasion in its tracks.

And if Congress is sitting there like a bunch of fools thinking the "answer" is to "get something passed" like SB 2611 McCain Kennedy bill .... boy oh boy are these Congressmen and Wackident in for the surprise of their lives.

Listen up MORONS ... we're not paying you these big salaries and providing you with the lives of kings and queens to sit around and jabber about "immigrants"' "better lives"; "human rights"' "cheap labor"; "jobs Americans won't do"; "guest worker programs" or "paths to citizenship" for illegal aliens. We're paying you to get them out; keep them out; and prosecute anyone who lets them in or helps them stay here.

    Very simple.

Now do your jobs or we're gonna fire you. For Congressmen and 1/3 of the United States Senate ... that day is less than 2 years away. For the Wackident ... it could be less ... far less .... don't ever underestimate the Will of the American People.
