Butler County Sheriff Gets Federal Power
    LAST UPDATE: 12/13/2006 6:39:12 PM

    Video

It is called 287-g and it gives local law enforcement, in this case, the Butler County Sheriff, the authority to enforce federal immigration laws.

Only seven such state and local agencies in the entire country are currently using the power at this time.

Local 12's Rich Jaffe says it's going to be a big deal in Butler County.

In May, when Butler County deputies picked up 18 admitted illegal immigrants on a construction site, they couldn't hold them because federal immigration violations were not within the local jurisdiction. Now that's changed with the power of 287-g.

Richard Jones, Butler County Sheriff: "If we go into a business and business supervisors, managers, are violating federal immigration law we can enforce that law, we can use federal courts, prosecutors, the nay sayers that have said all along, for a year and a half, he can't enforce federal law it's out of his jurisdiction that changed effective today."

This woman, who asked us not to reveal her identity, says with an illegal as a boyfriend, and many friends in the community, 287-g is already sending shockwaves through the Hispanic community.

"Marie", Girlfriend of Illegal: "They're going to be scared to come out, they're going to lose everything they have because they're not going to be able to go to work, go to the store to get any food, pay the rent, it's going to damage everybody's lives."

To the Sheriff's already somewhat famous illegal aliens here sign, he's just added yet another one. This one says not for long, but in the future there may be yet another sign, that one may say Federal Information Detention Center.

"We've got ICE, who have actually came here and inspected our jail on the detention side, they're looking at maybe even housing their employees here, and this maybe, hopefully will be a hub for deportation."

The Sheriff says while the expected exodus from his community will be bad for his neighbors, it will be good for Butler County...

    Rich Jaffe, Local 12.

The name 287-g is actually the designation of the section of the National Immigration and Nationality Act. It provides delegation of power to local authorities.

Deputies still have about four weeks of training to go through. But they are authorized to enforce the federal laws, as of yesterday.

    Sheriff Richard Jones

This is one hard working sheriff. He has been cracking down hard on illegals. I large crimminal ring was just busted in his county for manufacturing false IDs. I suspect many of these IDs were used to gain local employment. Congrats to the Sheriff Richard Jones, Butler County.

I would be happy with Cinci (Hamilton County), Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton, St. Clairsville (Belmont County).
