Casa de Maryland says Hondurans are in custody

Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials detained seven people from Honduras after a raid Thursday in Anne Arundel County, prompting a demonstration outside the Baltimore Federal Building.

ICE spokeswoman Ernestine Fobbs confirmed that an enforcement action took place and that seven Hondurans were in custody.

She said that because the investigation is continuing, she could provide only limited information. Fobbs did not disclose the name of the business where the Hondurans were working or the location of the business.

Protesters gathered outside the Federal Building in Baltimore late Thursday afternoon. About 15 people held signs and shouted slogans, including, "Reform not raids" and "Stop separating families."

Leaders of Casa de Maryland, advocates for immigrants' rights, said they were told that seven males, one of them a juvenile, were taken into custody at a Hanover restaurant.

Elizabeth Alex, Casa's lead organizer for the Baltimore region, said there haven't been many workplace raids under the Obama administration. Advocates had hoped that raids would stop until comprehensive immigration reform can be achieved.

"We're unhappy we're seeing a return to Bush-era policy," Alex said.

"We would hope immigration enforcement would be reserved for people who are criminals," she said later.

The protesters hoped that the detainees would be released on their own recognizance or be permitted to meet with legal counsel within 24 hours.

Alex said that people who have been detained after raids might be given contact information for lawyers but might not necessarily reach them before they are sent to detention centers in York, Pa., or on the Eastern Shore.

"Due process is part of the foundation of this country," said Gustavo Andrade, senior organizing director of Casa de Maryland.

Lawyers for Casa waited 90 minutes in the ICE offices before they were told that they would not be allowed to meet with the detainees, Alex said.

Uh, excuse me lady, illegal aliens ARE criminals. I think you must be suggesting that we should wait until IA's have committed a SECOND crime before they are arrested?? You're kidding me right? IA's have NO rights other than a speedy deportation. So shut your pie hole and quit trying to game the system to your benefit. We have enough of that going on already with our unconstitutional, law breaking politicians.

Tell me about Honduran "due process", not my own

I can do without people like Gustavo Andrade giving me a history lesson of my own nation's "due process".

Pathetic fools........... who do they think they are coming here illegally and expecting all of America to open their arms to them while they steal welfare, jobs, medical, food and housing and fill up our jails with their criminals!

Yup. Moreover, immigration raids are done under due process the same as roadblocks over the holidays to identify drunk drivers and other times to verify people have properly registered their vehicles and carry required insurance. Also, deportation of illegal aliens is accomplished under due process.

    .

    i live in maryland.

casa de maryland is in complete control of our government. we are not allowed to enforce immigration laws because casa de maryland cries foul as soon as an illegal alien is detained. MY tax dollars support casa de maryland, yet they are an anti-american, pro-illegal alien group who refuses to cooperate with authorities.

they also file lawsuits on behalf of every single illegal alien that gets into trouble in our state. trust me. if casa de maryland is involved, they will not stop until they get what they want, and that's amnesty for every illegal alien in maryland......

HOW WOULD YOU FEEL IF YOU WERE FORCED TO PAY TAXES TO SUPPORT THIS BULLSHIT!

I AM A LEGAL TAXPAYING CITIZEN, YET I HAVE TO FUND THIS CRAP:

Calling an illegal alien an "undocumented worker" is like calling a drug dealer an "unlicensed pharmacist"........

We fund them two! BUT, you fund them twice. Once in state taxes and then in Federal taxes. We are funding your illegals with our federal taxes. IT SUCKS and people NEED to stand up like we are and NOT take it ANYMORE!

All of us activists in illegal immigration, Tea partiers, and other groups CAN TAKE THIS PRESIDENTs agenda DOWN. There is not enough of the Chicago mafia in the WHITEhouse to take us all on. They can try but a R3volution will follow it.
They do have the power but we have the Constitution that Obama wipes his *ss with.

Love the sign "due process is the American way", meaning the U.S. way. Do they think just because they managed to sneak into our country that our laws apply to non-citizens?

Why wouldn't they, Bush and Obama enabled them and their corrupt country tells them we stole their land. We've had 6 amnesties so far, so doesn't that mean it doesn't work???? We seem to never learn from our mistakes do we?
i.e.. Vietnam and Afghanistan/Pakistan. We ware not a stupid people but we vote in stupid people to lead us. I wish there was NO PARTY'S, just good people that run......let 20 people run, who cares.

I could puke watching the jerks on CNN and MSNBC and since last night it's all Tea Party coverage. YET last year they missed the Tea Party coverage and didn't even show hundreds of thousands of them at the DC Mall. YET they show a PRO illegal immigration protest with 4 people and it was covered????

Every 5 minutes the idiots ask someone "who's the head of the Tea Party?" or "Who's the head of the Republican party?" They don't know who to run down so I say let's do it together with no leader. LOL

Let the Fake Journalists keep wasting their time interviewing about the fake President! They have to or they won't get their bailouts!!! LOL!!!!!!!!They talk about Beck, Hannity and O'Reily like they are the anti-Christ or something..... What about Olbermann, Ed Shultz, Piss Matthews and Rachael Maddow? They are all rabid-like flaming Liberals!

I watch the enemy, I know what they say and think and they are hateful and dangerous. That's why all the violence has come from the left, even if they NEVER report it..... they wait for the black guy to bring a gun to a Tea Party and the report on it and NEVER show he is black....... It doesn't "fit" their agenda. They all need to go back to journalism school and take the classes over. They haven't figured out that Obama does NOTHING BUT LIE! It's the end result they want NO MATTER WHAT IT TAKES!

Again, we are a stupid people and if we lose our country and freedom, WE DESERVE IT .... not us here but the majority of people in the US that have their heads in the sand screaming, "I don't want to talk politics or hear it either.

I have a lot vested in politics as I have lost 5 friends over politics & illegal immigration and 1 friend over religion in the past 3 years. Most of our framers all lost their fortunes and lives over the Constitution, so I'm luckier than they were.

It's worth it to save the country.
