Grayman Ward, 21, of Raleigh, leads the Walk for Immigration Justice on W. Union Street. The march is part of the 22nd Pilgrimage for Justice and Peace and focused on raising awareness and inspiring action for immigration and trade policy reform.
Julie N. Chang (The Morganton News Herald)

Morganton - Men and women, young and old, came together Monday morning to march through Morganton in an effort to raise awareness and inspire action for immigration justice.
Members of the Carolina Interfaith Task Force on Central America and the community gathered together at St. Charles Catholic Church on the second day of a planned 100-mile walk across North Carolina.

In a show of solidarity the group marched from the church to Case Farms carrying banners and crosses and singing songs.

Angel Schunke, 13, marched along with her mother, two brothers, sister and a friend. Schunke said her mother encouraged them to participate, and they obtained special permission to leave school. Schunke said, "This is a good experience, I thought it would be a good thing to do."

Gail Phares, the director of the task force, said they hoped to emphasize two things while in Morganton: the need for immigration reform and change in current trade policies. "It's time to change our laws," Phares said.

During a recent visit to the border near Nogales, Mexico, Phares was appalled at the strife she saw. Phares said she hopes the government will amend immigration and trade policies so Latinos may enter the U.S. again to better their financial situations.

Before the border was militarized in 1994, Latinos could travel back and forth between the U.S. and Mexico, said Phares. This allowed for Latinos to acquire jobs in the U.S. which supported their families, said Phares.

"They only come to work, they should not be the target," emphasized Phares. The decision to hold the walk during Holy Week serves to remind participants of Christian scripture.

Grayman Ward, 21, of Raleigh led the marchers up West Union Street, down College Street and then to Case Farms. Ward said, "I think U.S. trade policies are forcing people to move here because they can't make money in their own countries. They either have to sell drugs or move to the U.S."

The Carolina Interfaith Task Force on Central America Walk for Immigration Justice will continue on through Hickory, Winston-Salem, Greensboro, Burlington, Durham, Garner and Raleigh. Participants will focus on different aspects of immigration reform in each location.

American would also like to work, but are losing jobs in favor of cheap illegal labor. Charity begins at home. Maybe Phares would like to protest and march in Mexico?

Even Jesus said "Obey the laws". Our immigration laws need to be ENFORCED, not changed!

What part of Illegal do these fools not understand. Why don't they try marching for the rights of Americans. I consider this group an enemy to the Sovernity of my country and should be on the FBI's list.

They must be part of that other fine group Westboro Baptist Church. May they all rot in .......

Illegal immigration justice may be stated in 3 words:
    REPORT AND DEPORT

The right to be heard does not automatically include the right to be taken seriously.

This woman should be ashamed of herself. Why in the hell would she care if a Mexican Citizen could cross the border to get a job in the US. Has this woman lost her mind.

Further, if she was so "appalled" at the strife she saw, she should send a letter of protest to Calderon since the that would be Mexico's responsibility!

Better yet, why doesn't she take her immigration walk south of the border and march the streets of Mexico. Send Mexico the message directly. Lets see what happens.
