CA-17 Illegal immigrants arrested near Pendleton
Thirty-one people suspected of being smuggled into the United States were taken into custody by Border Patrol officers Monday.
In two smuggling attempts Monday, Mexican and Honduran nationals were dropped off from small boats in San Diego County, according to the Border Patrol. The boats dropped off the immigrants, then headed back toward Mexico.
In one of the incidents, a boat neared the sand at Red Beach, near Camp Pendleton, before 3 a.m. Border Patrol agents saw several people jump out of the boat and head toward the shore as the boat departed.
Border Patrol agents took 17 people into custody, including 13 males and 4 females.
Those arrested claimed to be Mexican nationals.
The second incident occurred closer to the border near the Tijuana River, where 14 people were taken into custody.
Federal officials said that as security has tightened around the U.S.-Mexico border in the last two years, they have seen an increase in maritime smuggling along the coast.
U.S. Border Patrol has been working with local law enforcement.
