CARLSBAD, Calif -- U.S. Border Patrol agents rounded up 20 suspected illegal immigrants Friday after they arrived on a North County beach in a small fishing boat.

An officer with the federal agency happened to be in the area and spotted the 30-foot skiff offshore from South Ponto Beach in Carlsbad shortly after 4:30 a.m., according to USBP public affairs personnel.

As the agent watched, the craft arrived onshore and 15 men and five women got off. Two other members of the group then pushed the boat back into the ocean and sailed out of the area.

Agents took the shore party into custody and determined that all 20 were Mexican nationals in the United States illegally. They were detained and taken to a Border Patrol station for processing.
