Taxpayers Fund Illegal Immigrant Sanctuary Ads

A major U.S. city has officially launched a taxpayer-financed advertisement campaign promoting it as a sanctuary for illegal immigrants to use public services without fear of punishment.

San Francisco’s $83,000 ad campaign was created specifically to assure the city’s estimated 40,000 illegal aliens that they can benefit from services such as public clinics, libraries and schools without fear of being reported to federal immigration authorities.

The notoriously liberal northern California city by the bay has for decades been a sanctuary for illegal immigrants but officials want to make certain that those in the country illegally know they are protected in their municipality. To spread the word among the immigrant communities, lawmakers spent nearly $100,000 on print and radio ads, bus shelter announcements, billboards and multi-language brochures.

In a press release posted on the city’s web site, Mayor Gavin Newsom confirms that the public awareness campaign is to assure undocumented residents that accessing city services does not make an individual vulnerable to federal immigration authorities. He reminds illegal aliens that city employees will not report individuals or their immigration status to federal immigration agents therefore they should feel safe when they visit a public health clinic, enroll their children in school, report a crime to police or seek other city services. .

Newsome is trying to outdo Villaraigosa for the hispanic vote next year when they both run for Governor. Villaraigosa is more devious because he denies that LA is a sanctuary city. However, LA has 10x more illegals because SF is unaffordable to low income workers...so Newsome can afford to advertise. I hope CA is completely bankrupt by the time the election rolls around...maybe we can bring some sanity back!

San Francisco advertises services for illegal immigrants

SAN FRANCISCO -- This city has long considered itself a compassionate place, promoting gay marriages and expanded homeless welfare programs.

Now officials are extending a very public welcome to undocumented workers.

This week, the city launched a campaign featuring TV and radio ads, billboards and bus signs reminding residents of its status as a sanctuary city for illegal immigrants. The $83,000 blitz will include brochures distributed at police stations and hospitals, promising safe access to city services regardless of residency status.

"We're inviting people to come out of the shadows and take advantage of services," said Mayor Gavin Newsom. San Francisco has tried to make this point clear for years.

Since it became a sanctuary city in 1989, the city has barred employees from assisting federal officials with immigration investigations or arrests. But Newsom said recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids in San Francisco and the Bay Area convinced him the city needed to do more.

City officials wanted to remind illegal workers that the city would not play a part in any possible discrimination they might encounter at the hands of the federal government, the mayor said.

While numerous communities -- including San Jose, Oakland, Seattle and Miami -- consider themselves sanctuary cities, none of the others has launched a campaign to advertise that fact, officials here say.

Los Angeles does not consider itself a sanctuary city, but officials say police will not take part in federal immigration raids. "Our officers are not immigration officers," said Matt Szabo, a spokesman for Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.
A spokesman for Los Angeles County Supervisor Mike Antonovich called San Francisco's program "a tragedy."

"It's an insult to the people who waited in line and filled out forms so they would do things right," said Tony Bell. "For them, it's a slap in the face."

Newsom deflected such criticism. "We're not trying to convince people in Los Angeles," he said. "We're trying to assist people in our own city and county."

San Francisco's ads -- written in English, Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese and Russian -- encourage residents to seek services and report crimes without fear of being deported.

Newsom, a Democrat who is considering a run for governor in 2010, said he hopes it will have an effect at shelters and psychiatric intake units. He acknowledged that much of the reaction to the sanctuary program has been negative, attracting even more criticism than his stand on gay marriage.

Heard on KSFO 560 this morning that the City of SF has to pay the Feds back the money they got to fight the Illegals. John and Ken were talking about this yesterday and they see it as a win win for southern CA.

If Frisco wants illegals they can all go up there.

They found there are bus fares one-way from LA to Frisco for $10.

People were calling in willing to donate some fares to help the illegals get up there.

Didn't hear the entire segment but surely it was just for fun and it was fun hearing them because they were excited about the idea.
