NORTHRIDGE - A 16-year-old Taft High School student was shot to death Sunday after a fight broke out at a birthday party gang members might have crashed, authorities said.
Michael Fabian died in the alley behind the home in the 8500 block of Corbin Avenue after trying to keep people from getting involved in the fight about 12:45 a.m., said Los Angeles police Detective Mike Fesperman of the Devonshire Division.

"Not involved in the fight at all," he said of Michael. "Just happened to be in the wrong spot at that time."

It's unclear what started the altercation, but it apparently involved someone who might be a gang member, Fesperman said.

Words were exchanged inside the home, and then partygoers spilled into the alley, where Michael, a junior at Taft, and another person were shot.

The second victim, whose name was not released, was taken to Northridge Hospital Medical Center with a gunshot wound to the shoulder and is expected to recover, Fesperman said.

Nobody at the party seemed to know the shooter, even though there were about 150 people there. No description was given, besides "Latino male."
