CAIR Condemns ICE Raids in Maryland

(BALTIMORE, MD, 6/26/19) - The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation's largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today condemned reports of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity in Columbia, Md.
Numerous eyewitness accounts indicated agents in black ICE t-shirts were stopping vehicles and checking ID’s. In one case, up to eight or nine people were reportedly arrested and taken into custody.
This activity comes one day after the U.S. House of Representatives voted in favor of $4.5 billion in humanitarian aid to address horrific conditions facing a crush of migrants at the U.S. Mexico border, on the heels of the Trump administration postponing a massive roundup of migrant families in cities across America over the weekend.
SEE: ICE notifies Howard County police of potential 'criminal enforcement' in Columbia

According to a spokeswoman for the Howard County Police Department, their dispatch center received notification this morning that ICE would be in the Columbia area, but the Howard County police “are not involved in the operation in any way.”
“Today, American Muslims and their allies are marking the first anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court ruling on Trump’s unconstitutional Muslim travel ban, and it’s impossible to not draw parallels between the impact of that ban and today’s ICE raids targeting immigrant communities in Columbia,” said CAIR Director of Maryland Outreach Zainab Chaudry.
“These actions and policies are symptomatic of the Trump administration’s broader anti-immigrant, anti-Muslim, anti-refugee agenda, and we condemn this type of fear-mongering and xenophobia in the strongest terms possible.”
One Howard County councilwoman has urged community members to know their rights, remain silent, to not open the door, and to call an immigration hotline immediately if you are impacted.

CAIR recently issued an action alert calling for humane conditions for migrant children at the border after reports revealed deplorable, unsanitary living conditions.
