California newspaper office vandalized over use of 'illegal' immigrant label
California newspaper office vandalized over use of 'illegal' immigrant label
Published January 08, 2015 FoxNews.com
The headquarters of the Santa Barbara News-Press in California was vandalized, apparently by pro-illegal immigration activists.
A California newspaper will continue to use the term "illegals" to describe people who enter the U.S. without permission, despite an attack on its building by vandals believed to object to the term.
The Santa Barbara News-Press's front entrance was sprayed with the message "The border is illegal, not the people who cross it" in red paint, sometime either Wednesday night or early Thursday, according to the newspaper's director of operations, Donald Katich.
The attack came amid wider objections to a News-Press headline that used the word "illegals" alongside a story on California granting driver's licenses to people in the country illegally.
"It is an appropriate term in describing someone as “illegal” if they are in this country illegally."- Statement from Santa Barbara News-Press
"The vandalism and the damage speak for itself, as well as the motivation behind it," Santa Barbara Police Officer Mitch Jan said.
"At this point in time, I don't really have any suspect information.
Without cameras or an eyewitness, we really don't know who would be responsible."
In addition to the writing on the building, graffiti espousing a no-borders mentality was scribbled on the walkway through Storke Placita and the sidewalk near Santa Barbara City Hall. Police were braced for a protest in front of the paper later this week. Jan said hundreds could show up, and the Police Department is aware of the call for a protest.
"There is a plan underway," he said. "There is extra staffing on board for it."
In a statement, the newspaper said it has no plans to drop its style in describing illegal immigrants.
"It has been the practice for nearly 10 years at the Santa Barbara News-Press to describe people living in this country illegally as “illegals” regardless of their country of origin," the statement read.
"This practice is under fire by some immigration groups who believe that this term is demeaning and does not accurately reflect the status of “undocumented immigrants,” one of several terms other media use to describe people in the Unites States illegally.
"It is an appropriate term in describing someone as “illegal” if they are in this country illegally," the statement added.
The debate over how to label people who are in the U.S. without permission has raged at news organizations across the nation in recent years. In 2013, both The Associated Press and the Los Angeles Times banned the phrase after employing it for decades, saying it "lacked precision," according to Pew Research Center.
The Washington Post, The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal all use the phrase, although only The Wall Street Journal uses “illegal immigrant” to refer to people who not only criminally enter the U.S. without the proper documentation, but also those who overstay their visas.
FoxNews.com's policy is to describe immigrants who are in the U.S. illegally as "illegal immigrants."

Protestors Rally Against Santa Barbara News-Press
Paper Defends Use of "Illegals" in Front Page Story on Undocumented Immigrants

News-Press Backlash
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -An estimated 100 people demonstrated in front of the Santa Barbara News-Press offices Thursday night, just hours after the historic building was hit by vandals who spray painted slogans and fired paint ball splotches against a window.

Santa Barbara Police said damage estimates of almost $1,500 to the building and sidewalks nearby make the crime a potential felony, if anyone responsible for the damage was arrested.
Clean-up crews began power-washing the side of the newspaper building to remove graffiti Thursday morning. Sidewalks had yet to be cleaned as of Thursday night.
The vandalism came several days after a Saturday front page article in the News-Press on the new law allowing undocumented immigrants to apply for driver's licenses from the Department of Motor Vehicles. The article included a photo of people at a DMV office with the headline "Illegals Line Up for Driver's Licenses."
A petition on the website change.org demanded the newspaper retract the story and apologize to the community for what was called "hateful and racist language." As of Thursday, 2,500 had supported the petition. A spot check of the petition indicated the majority of supporters were from outside Santa Barbara County.
Thursday afternoon, News-Press Director of News Operations Don Katich released this statement:
"It has been the practice for nearly 10 years at the Santa Barbara News-Press to describe people living in this country illegally as “illegals” regardless of their country of origin. This practice is under fire by some immigration groups who believe that this term is demeaning and does not accurately reflect the status of “undocumented immigrants,” one of several terms other media use to describe people in the Unites States illegally.
You have to look no further than the White House website to see the term “illegal” used when describing the 2 million illegal immigrants President Obama has deported since taking office for being in the U.S. illegally.
It is an appropriate term in describing someone as “illegal” if they are in this country illegally.
The colossal mess that describes the U.S. immigration policy is a product of unenforced laws, conflicting legislation, unsecured borders, executive action and political pandering.
However the most egregious aspect of the U.S. immigration condition is the appearance of lawlessness that subjects millions of people living in this country illegally as pawns in a never-ending game of political posturing.
The outrage voiced by immigration advocates should be directed at the current immigration system that takes years of bureaucratic red tape to complete. This outrage is shared by those who go through the process legally and stand at the end of the line of those who skirt U.S. law.
Ours is a system of laws, a system so valued that people from around the world – including many from lawless nations – flock here to be a part of it. The United States of America affords those seeking it a lawful immigration process; it also affords the politically persecuted a haven from persecution. With this freedom comes responsibility. As history has shown, some choose to wait out the process, while others choose to come here on their own terms. The latter are illegal in the eyes of this valued system and the Santa Barbara News-Press calls them so.
When breaking the law becomes the norm, America is no better than other lawless nations."
(emphasis added)
At Thursday night's demonstration, protestor Anthony Rodriguez criticized the newspaper's policy.
“That word is ridiculous. Uncalled for. You need to understand we don’t degrade people. We’re all human beings," Rodriguez said.
Santa Barbara City Councilwoman Cathy Murillo attended the rally in support of the protestors.
"It's energizing people. We need to have respect for our immigrant families in the city of Santa Barbara. The economy runs on the service workers. They deserve more respect than the headline," Murillo said.
The group staged a peaceful walk down State Street after about an hour in front of the newspaper's offices.
Demonstrators told reporters they would return on January 19 if there was no retraction or change in policy.
Earlier in the week, critics referred to a "Stylebook" from the Associated Press, used by some news agencies for wording, grammar and language guidelines on published material. In 2013, the Stylebook advised writers to stop using the word "illegal" when referring to an undocumented immigrant.
A posting of the change on the AP website said "The Stylebook no longer sanctions the term “illegal immigrant” or the use of “illegal” to describe a person. Instead, it tells users that “illegal” should describe only an action, such as living in or immigrating to a country illegally."
The AP Stylebook is advisory only and it is not uncommon for news organizations to set their own editorial policies.
The News-Press has published Letters to the Editor both against and in support of the original article.
Santa Barbara Police continue to investigate the vandalism, with no arrests made to date.
At 6 p.m. on January 8, 2015, protesters rallied at De La Guerra Plaza in Santa Barbara to protest the Santa Barbara News-Press' use of the word "illegal" in a recent newspaper headline.
Protesters marched down State Street to chants and signs raised high in the air. Santa Barbara police were forced to shut down certain intersections in downtown to keep marchers safe.
The march ended with a sit down in the middle of the street at State and De la Guerra streets. Protesters threatened to return on January 19 if the Santa Barbara News-Press does not correct their headline.
Here now is a compilation of the images captured by Digital Journalist Oscar Flores that night.

Sigh, let's approach this from a linguistic standpoint. "Immigration" is defined as, "...the movement of people into a country to which they are not native in order to settle there, especially as permanent residents or future citizens." (Wikipedia) and an immigrant by Merriam Webster as, ".. a person who comes to a country to live there." Check. That's what individuals from Mexico, Central America, and other areas and countries have done. Merriam-Webster defines illegal as "...not according to or authorized by law". Illegal immigration is the migration of people across national borders in a way that violates the immigration laws of the destination country Merriam-Webster specifically uses the term illegal immigrant as an example of use of the word illegal. Just because some consider the term as lacking in precision doesn't make it so- shame on you, AP. And because some don't like the term doesn't make it any less accurate.
I've taught English to adult immigrants, a considerable number of them illegal, for a long time. Yes, as much as I like them as people they're illegal, sorry, and need to remedy their predicament the legal way. Studying English is a step in the right direction but they also need to postpone having families and buying property until they've completed steps to become legal. It's the proper and respectful thing to do. Just as I don't call heavy people fat I use the euphemism undocumented individual occasionally on school property but the reality is they're illegal immigrants and everyone knows it. This is really a ridiculous argument.

Correct! You know the saddest thing about illegal aliens is the fact that they're free to roam here, free to graffiti newspapers, sign up for welfare, cell phones, tax credit welfare, charity, college, jobs and so forth, free to rally and protest, free to speak and write and redefine themselves, free to work by day and run drugs by night, free to lobby and I'm sure vote, free to drive and commit crimes, as some type of superior class of untouchables, when under our law, they're supposed to be in jail or deported.
I just have no sympathy whatsoever for these people. Why would I? Why does anyone? They are bold, arrogant, self-centered, disrespectful, all about themselves criminals. Why any politician gives them a second thought, let alone first thought, is beyond me, other than those who support illegal aliens are part of the drug cartels' US puppet corps since of course the foreign drug cartels need people here to run their drug business and a steady stream to bring the drugs in and haul the money out.
The only way a US politician would ever associate or align with such people is they're either dumber than goat poop or they're on the take with the cartels. And since most of our politicians are lawyers, doctors, business people, teachers and so forth, the dumber than goat poop doesn't really fly, now does it? Nope, which just leaves the only viable explanation for their statements and actions is that they're on the take with the cartels.
And puleeze don't tell me about "cheap labor". Businesses aren't aligning themselves with this non-background check, no ID, no papers, no English, no education, no references, no training, no skills, whiny ass group of miscreants to save a couple of bucks an hour on labor. Businesses who hire illegal aliens are involved in far more than "cheap labor", they're on the take with the drug cartels and the labor networks that funnel these worker/drug runners into the country.Last edited by Judy; 01-13-2015 at 04:25 AM.

Meredit,
While you were busy teaching wetbacks OUR language - presumably for free - and while you were making your case by nosing through dictionaries, did you bother to look up words like "patriot", "invader", "murder", "rape", "theft", "contagious diseases", "child molestation", "drug trafficking", "law breakers", and "massive taxpayer burden"?
Apparently all of that is OK with you, otherwise you wouldn't "like them as people" and you wouldn't betray your own country by sympathizing with them and bending over backward for them.
You make me want to PUKE!Last edited by tray; 01-28-2015 at 12:11 PM.
