California Sends Undocumented Inmates Out of State

La Opinión, Posted: Oct 30, 2007

SACRAMENTO -- California sends many of its undocumented immigrant prisoners out of state, reports Spanish-language newspaper La Opinión. The state has sent 1,500 inmates to private prisons in Arizona, Mississippi and Tennessee in the last year and plans to send 8,000 more prisoners out of state in the next two years. One third of the inmates who have been transferred have pending deportation orders.

La Opinión has been corresponding with inmates who claim that the majority of the inmates sent to other states are undocumented immigrants. These inmates say they are upset about being involuntarily transferred to prisons far away from their families. The California penal code indicates that no inmate shall be transferred to a prison in another state without giving their written consent. The inmates assert that they are not given this option. One man explained that inmates are told that if they do not consent to transfer to Arizona, they will be punished by being sent further away to Mississippi.

According to La Opinión, California is saving money by sending away inmates for whom the state will not have to pay a return transport. After serving their time, undocumented immigrants will be turned over to federal immigration authorities and deported.
