Candidate for governor of Mexican state of Tamaulipas killed in shootout

A candidate for governor of the northern Mexican state of Tamaulipas, which borders Texas, and three others have been killed in a shootout, the Notimex news agency reports.

Rodolfo Torre, candidate of the Institutional Revolution Party (PRI), was on his way to the airport in Ciudad Victoria when he was killed, Reuters reports. Four others were injured.

Reuters notes that Mexican drug cartels have launched a campaign of intimidation against some politicians running in elections.

The Army and police quickly cordoned off the area, Notimex reports.
