Capitol, Congress and Media fail Citizens

The Tampa Tribune today (8-26-200 ran an editorial blaming a crimes spree committed by illegal aliens on the Capitol for not enforcing immigration laws. The Tribune has run many articles and editorials sympathetic to immigrants, I think this is the first time they used the phrase 'illegal immigrant' as opposed to 'undocumented'. This is what I wrote in response to them, I doubt it gets published.

The Tampa Tribune is part of the problem when discussing illegal immigration, not just the White House and governments that refuse to enforce or obey our own laws as your editorial Tuesday 8-26-2008 suggests.
Despite multiple violent crimes committed against U.S. Citizens by illegal aliens you still can't bring yourselves to print the correct legal term for 'illegal immigrants', which is Illegal Alien. This says much about your paper and the bias it holds against U.S. Citizens in favor of criminals from other countries. You down play immigrant crimes and magnifying citizen resistance of illegals into racism, despite the fact both groups are made up of all skin colors, the only real difference is one group obeys the law and the other doesn't yet you align with the criminals against the citizens.
The 'Undocumented Immigrant' label certainly does not apply in the case of Rigoberto Moron Martinez and and his cohorts who raped and robbed with abandon in the Tampa Bay area despite the fact Martinez was arrested and found to be an illegal alien, but not punished or deported. Our law enforcement agencies dropped the ball by not following up on this criminal, but he WAS 'documented', then set free to continue committing crimes on citizens.
The media (that's you) has taken a sympathetic approach to 'undocumented' aliens running multiple stories of their difficulties and their accomplishments while ignoring their negative impact on US Citizens, our taxes, our government and the rule of law.
"How do we Citizens get our employees, the government, to obey and enforce our laws while the media resists enforcement and makes the law breakers sympathetic characters despite their criminal lifestyles?"
The next question is, 'Which other laws do aliens get to ignore and still remain sympathetic, while we Citizens are expected to obey them all?'
There is no 'Equal Protection' under the law as long as some law breakers are protected from prosecution while Citizens are expected to obey every law and are labeled 'racist' by the media when we want the law enforced.
If you don't like the law then work within the system to change it, until then OBEY the law and encourage others, including our local, state and federal government 'Undocumented immigrants' and the media to obey the law too!
Nonfeasance of office, the refusal to do that which should be done. Officials do not enforce the law, grounds for dismissal and prosecution for refusing to do what they were hired to do!

Here's the EDITORIAL in the Tampa Tribune.

Search For Culprit In Immigrants' Crime Spree Starts On Capitol Hill

    The Tampa Tribune

    Published: August 26, 2008

Though she bungled the delivery, U.S. Rep. Ginny Brown-Waite was right Monday to call for a federal investigation of how two illegal immigrants with arrest records were free to allegedly carry out a string of violent robberies and rapes.

This region was let down by a system that released two illegal immigrants who went on to terrorize women and restaurant owners. Lessons must be learned to prevent other innocent citizens from facing a similar horror.

But before throwing stones at Hillsborough County Sheriff David Gee, the congresswoman should have accepted responsibility for the federal government's failure to protect communities from criminals who enter this country illegally.

The federal government, after all, is charged with enforcing immigration laws. Yet Immigration and Customs Enforcement generally only deports illegal immigrants who have been convicted of serious crimes.

Perhaps the deportation bar is set too high. In a perfect world, any illegal immigrant who runs up against law enforcement should be deported.

But it's easy to call for zero tolerance, as Brown-Waite has. It's another thing to make it work.

Imagine you're a sheriff's deputy who stops a speeding car driven by a man who has brown skin and speaks no English. You think he's from Latin America, but how do you know if he's here illegally? The courts say you can't arrest someone for not speaking English and not surprisingly, illegal immigrants don't generally volunteer information about being illegal. Neither can you ask for proof of citizenship since Americans aren't required to carry national identification cards.

Perhaps the driver's license looks forged, though it seems to check out. You could take the man to jail on suspicion of violating immigration laws, but don't count on ICE to help with the research and interviews. The agency lacks the manpower for all but the serious cases.

Perhaps you're right and the man is convicted. And miracle of miracles, the federal government holds him for deportation, something that happens in only a fraction of cases. Odds are you will see the man again. The Mexican border is so porous that Sheriff Gee says some thugs facing deportation boast, "I'll see you guys in a couple of months."

So while a zero-tolerance policy theoretically makes sense, realistically it's impossible to hold immigration suspects until they get their day in court. Judges already complain about the workload at the courthouse. An aggressive, zero-tolerance policy would overwhelm them.

Brown-Waite was quick to single out Sheriff Gee for releasing Rigoberto Moron Martinez and Vincente Reyes-Carbajal, both illegal immigrants from Mexico, who've been cumulatively charged with more than 50 counts stemming from four separate attacks this summer.

Both men had previous arrests - Martinez for not having a valid driver's license and domestic violence, and Reyes-Carbajal for driving without a license.

Gee says his office told ICE about having Martinez in custody on a misdemeanor charge on Aug. 5. The agency automatically acknowledged the sheriff's daily alert, but never issued a detainer hold.

This happens all the time. ICE only selectively issues a detainer hold, which would prevent someone from posting bond or getting released on their own recognizance. Local judges lack the power to hold someone on federal immigration charges.

Brown-Waite sits on the Homeland Security committee, a position that provides a megaphone for fixing the mess with illegal immigration.

So yes, let's have that federal investigation, and let the chips fall where they may.

This blunder starts at the top.

Sheriff Gee would like to be the first to testify.

Thanks ShockedinCalifornia for posting the editorial, I'm not very computer savvy.

Thanks, Shocked. I am amazed that they have taken such a stance, and I think this editorial should be circulated as far and wide as possible, starting with the NY Times and Wash. Post. There must have been some top management changes in the near past, but one that is working out for the best, if they keep this up.

Perhaps what the Tampa Tribune is doing is amking sure that centrotampa.com (espanol news) is ticking along and prospering because hey they are simply diversifying and seeking to make profits, right? They don't care about Americans, they care about growing their business and so Spanish is one way to do it!

You are so right, only Profiteers, Politicians, Papers and Pundits are making money and growing power by profiting off the backs of illegal aliens..
The papers would have us feel sorry for the illegal who gets thrown off a job without a paycheck, or works for less because he is committing a crime and his boss could have him deported if he doesn't, but the fact is illegals couldn't be exploited if they had not put themselves in a position to be exploited, in other words, if they were legal they could call the cops or the EEOC, WE did not make them cross the border, they choose to live with out law, so they suffer the consequences, their choice!

It's an absolute outrage that business are essentially floating the idea that we have become a bilingual nation when realy we have not. They are simply trying to capture another market and getting entrenched in it because there is money to be made, it has been folded in their business model. We need to denounce this as very dangerous.

In America we can only tolerate English + Help. nothing else as far as a second more special language. At the of day, enough is enough. You can thank slick willie for this! Learn English or go home. We are NOT 'nueva americana latina" or the United Nations!

actually we should create a movement of civic minded Americans and legal residents who patronize businesses that do it legally!
