A Mexican national was severely injured Tuesday morning after the car he was driving crashed through the international border fence in San Luis and landed in the United States.

According to Andrea Moreno of the San Luis Police Department, at around 7:20 a.m. officers responded to assist Yuma Sector Border Patrol agents in regards to a single-vehicle collision that occurred at Avenue G.

Once on scene officers found that a compact four-door sedan had crashed through the international border fence and landed on the U.S. side approximately 40 feet in.

The driver of the vehicle, whose name has not been released, sustained serious injuries and was transported to Yuma Regional Medical Center.

Agent Thomas D. Lines of the Yuma Sector Public Affairs Office added that the fence where the car went through has already been repaired.

Lines, who visited the scene shortly after the wreck happened, explained that the road the man was driving on was not the road that is parallel to the border fence but one that runs perpendicular to it.

The cause of the accident is unknown at this time and is currently being investigated.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Corporal Emman Botello at 928-341-2420.
