HOUSTON — A 37-year-old Pakistani man has been sentenced to 13 months in prison and fined more than $140,000 for trafficking counterfeit prescription drugs authorities say he obtained from sources in Pakistan and London.

The Justice Department says Irfan Qadir will be deported once he completes the sentence handed down Monday by U.S. District Judge Vanessa Gilmore because he also overstayed a visa, meaning he was in the United States illegally.

Qadir in September pleaded guilty to conspiracy and trafficking in counterfeit pharmaceuticals. Evidence showed he sold the pills for as much as $5 apiece from a neighborhood market he operated in southwest Houston.

The investigation began last year after federal agents found packages from China addressed to Qadir's post office box. Drugs inside were tested and found to be fakes.
