TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - Researchers will soon study the effectiveness of U.S. Border Patrol checkpoints.
Armed with a $500,000 grant, the University of Arizona's National Center for Border Security and Immigration plans to study the impact checkpoints have on nearby communities over two years beginning in 2011.
The research center's executive director says the study includes assessing current methods used by Border Patrol agents to collect data in order to create national standards.
Researchers also plan to look at the negative effects checkpoints have on real estate values and traffic flows.
They will also study the positive effects like having law enforcement near communities.
Checkpoints around the country will be the focus of the study including one south of Tucson on Interstate 19.
