Checkpoints net 2 arrests, 20 citations

Checkpoints net two arrests, 20 citations

    By: North County Times -

ESCONDIDO -- The Escondido Police Department arrested two motorists during one of two drivers license checkpoints Monday, officers said.

One driver was arrested on an outstanding warrant, according to a statement released by Lt. Tom Albergo. The other was arrested for having false immigration documents, Albergo said.

Officers said 20 people were cited for not having a license.

The checkpoints were held on Bear Valley Parkway near Kit Carson Park and at 9th Avenue and Tulip Street. Five drivers were cited at the Bear Valley checkpoint and 15 at the 9th Avenue checkpoint, police said.

The two arrests were at the 9th Avenue checkpoint.

A news release did not say whether any vehicles were impounded at Monday's checkpoint and an officer reached at the station late Monday said he did not know.

At least 1,376 vehicles have been impounded during Escondido checkpoints in the last three years, according to the California Office of Traffic Safety.

The checkpoints and the policy of impounding cars have angered some community residents, who argue that the checkpoints are a backdoor way of checking immigration status, particularly for Latinos.

But police say hit-and-run crashes are down 24 percent in Escondido because of its driver's license checkpoints program.

. 65% of illegal aliens in America are Mexican. They are considered latinos. An unknow number of other latinos are also OTM's. Probaby, 80-90% of illegal aliens in this country are latinos. So, if you stop 10 cars for probable cause, at least 8 of them are going to be occupied by latinos. Is this racial profiling? No, it's just what the population of illegal aliens bears out.
