Businesses won't let immigration reform die
    By Walter C. Jones,
    The Times-Union

ATLANTA - A coalition of Georgia businesses hasn't let up its campaign for immigration legislation despite seeing the issue bog down in Congress and criticism hurled its way.
    --------------------------------------------------

The coalition of 21 individual businesses and trade associations, called Georgia Employers for Immigration Reform, argues that the state's economy depends on immigrant workers and that the jobs of native Georgians could be lost if federal law stops the flow of aliens. It suffered a defeat June 29 when the Senate failed to stop a filibuster resulting in no vote on a bipartisan reform bill the group supported.

And a video has been posted on the YouTube Internet site by someone calling for a boycott against Pilgrim's Pride Corp., the state's largest chicken company and a leader in the coalition.

Still, coalition members are looking forward to another debate on the floor of the Senate.

"We've have a couple of skull sessions, and we continue to follow what the Congress is doing," said spokesman Jay Morgan. "We know that there are a lot of people who are having, shall we say, voter's remorse. They really didn't want the issue to die without a resolution."

During Congress' August recess, coalition members have met with some representatives and senators. At the same time, they've urged their employees to buttonhole the members of Congress with the same message.

To get the public on board, or at least dampen some criticism in this staunchly conservative state, the coalition has also run an ad in a Macon newspaper and on some radio stations.

"If Georgia producers, poultry processors and contractors can't find workers, they can't survive," the ad states. "And if Georgia's No. 1 industry - agriculture - fails, other local businesses, from grocery stores to fertilizer and farm machinery suppliers, will suffer. And so will the Georgians they employ."

But advocates for stricter immigration policies oppose the coalition, like Americans for Immigration Control.

"I hope they're not facilitating greedy employers who just want cheap labor," Immigration Control spokesman Phil Kent said of the coalition.

Kent said it's insulting to American workers to say they're not willing to take poultry-processing or construction jobs in place of illegal immigrants.

Morgan, on the other hand, says it's unrealistic to expect the 12 million illegal aliens already in the United States to simply return home or be deported.

Despite the tension, Morgan said the employers would keep fighting.

"We are business people. We know that these things take time," he said. "We are maintaining the coalition and the conversation."

I call on all my fellow Georgian Alipac members to call, write, bitch do whatever we have to keep the pressure on. Getting rid of illegals is not going
to hurt our jobs. This is just more lies being spread in an attempt to keep a cheap labor force so they can continue to line there pockets and not have to pay you, i and other legal Americans.

Your right. I have been by there many times and it does look like being in Mexico. Ive been told in the morning after night shift, day shift cleaners
have to go out in the parking lot and pickup Condoms left there by the night shift employees. I didn't even think they used Condoms.

sosad Are we ready yet to boycott?

Personally, I think it would be fruitless to go after each company by itself. The illegals would just move on to another.

Also, some of those companies we, as individuals won't ever purchase the products they sell - directly.

If, however, we would go after the entire poultry industry, we would not only get the companies we purchase from - it would be felt down the line to their suppliers - some of those on the list.

We simply need to realize money is what is greasing the skid, and we are furnishing the money. If we withhold our money from these people, they will realize it.

I beg everyone to consider this.

It is good to boycott anything you feel strongly about,

A nationwide boycott of one large industry would have far reaching effects.

It would affect the suppliers to this industry - also if it is nationwide, they won't just move from the GA poultry industry to the Texas or Arkansas poultry jobs. They will be affected also.

Also, as the poultry workers and families left because of no jobs, the family members who worked other industries there would go with them.
So as the poultry industry would feel it, so might the wine industry in GA, or CA, or other things in other states.

As the poultry workers - and families left -the illegally owned businesses would also feel the pinch.

A boycott nationwide would be noticed - it would have to be. A nationwide boycott of just one large industry would be something we could all particpate in.

Remember how good it felt when we stopped the amnesty?

Think how great it would feel if we could get the attention of the greedy employers who think they are so above any law. The one law they haven't been able to buy is the 'law of supply and demand'. Oh, they can manipulate it through government subsidies, etc., but if we don't demand their products - -- they won't continue to hire the illegals.

And all we have to do is not purchase poultry products.
