LA MESA – The California Highway Patrol stopped a pickup loaded with about 25 suspected illegal immigrants, two or three of whom ran away late Thursday night.

The driver escaped, but a woman who ran was picked up a short distance away on the freeway.

The CHP said the white Ford F150 pickup with a camper shell was headed south on state Route 125 north of Spring Street about 11:10 p.m. when an officer tried to pull over the driver, who had been weaving in the lanes.

The pickup driver pulled onto the right shoulder, driving slowly for a few hundred yards before he jumped out and ran. Two or three passengers also ran, and the truck drifted across the freeway lanes and hit the center divider, a CHP officer said.

Officers found 22 people in the truck and caught one woman a short distance away on the freeway. No one was injured. The driver was last seen on nearby Panorama Drive. The Border Patrol was called to take into custody the passengers, ages 14 to 26, all reported as Mexican nationals without documents.

An officer said the truck had been modified with extra springs to carry the weight of all the people, but it was still too overloaded to steer properly.
