Civil Rights Leader Denounces Amnesty/Guest Worker Plans
Calls Proposals A Slap In The Face For Black Americans


MIAMI, April 19 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- T. Willard Fair, Founder and Chairman of Independent Voices For Change, President of the Urban League of Greater Miami Inc. and long-time civil rights leader, has joined with a national workers' group in an advertising campaign to assail proposals awarding amnesty to illegal foreign workers and importing hundreds of thousands more low skilled foreign workers.

Mr. Fair, who has focused since the 1960s on job training and placement for Black Americans, says this goal has become "mission impossible" as the government allows millions of foreign workers, both legal and illegal, to take American jobs.

"Once again, nobody is looking out for Black America," Fair said. "Low skilled Black Americans are some of the most vulnerable members of our society, and they must be made whole before there is any discussion of amnesty or guest worker programs. Congress needs to wake up and put the interests of American citizens before the interests of citizens of other countries."

The first ad in the series quotes a National Bureau of Economic Research report which concludes that 40% of the decline in employment among Black American men is due to the hiring of low-skilled foreign workers. Referencing Congress, the ad makes the point that "some members see amnesties and guest worker programs as an easy way to get votes; some as cheap labor for their supporters." The ad suggests that Congress look at the facts before voting for amnesty and warns that Black Americans are going to be looking at how individual members vote.

The advertising campaign will run in major newspapers, trade publications and national magazines over the coming months. Spending on the campaign is undisclosed.
