And it has been over twenty years of no checking the I-9s on immigrants hired and being hired everywhere. Employers just fill out I-9s and file the form in a cabinet, this is a practice to fool American Citizens.

Classic call. Thinking about it this morning -bet they are talking about it in the office.

What a public relations nightmare for him. Like Jesse Jackson Jr. and Gov. Blago in Illinois. Got to watch the company you keep.

Geesh, the anti-immigrant, pro-illegal alien crowd will grasp at any straw. Obviously, they have it backwards. This is further proof why we must have no amnesty and consistently enforce our existing immigration laws --including against elitist amnesty-proponents such as Chertoff.

    Security Is Indivisible
By Mark Krikorian, December 12, 2008

We all got a chuckle from the story that the Secret Service let illegal aliens in to clean Chertoff's house. But the take-home point is this, from today's Washington Times editorial: "if the system can be fooled by a house cleaner, it can be fooled by a terrorist." As the original Washington Post story noted: "The Secret Service uses workers' ID information to conduct security checks, not immigration checks." But it's a PC fantasy to imagine that we can know who someone is without knowing whether or not he's an illegal alien.

I was just thinking who cleans the houses of the Joint Chiefs? What about their staffs? It kind of reminds me of Oswald. He was able to assassinate Kennedy even though he was supposedly being watched by the CIA, FBI, Dallas Police and several other law enforcement agencies. I guess the Mafia was watching him too?

Your exactly right Populist! If illegal invader scofflaws are brazen enough to submit fradulent documentation to the FBI, in order to gain clearance to clean the head of Homeland Security's home - then what wouldn't they do!

If Chertoff, the FBI and the firm who supplied the labor to clean his home can be fooled( so they claim), then so can everyone else! All the more reason as to why there should be no amnesty and why E-Verify MUST be made mandatory law!

Another OBL take on this issue.

Sec. Chertoff's housecleaners may have been undocumented but they weren't criminals

There's a lesson to be learned from the latest high-ranking government figure who unwittingly got punk'd for employing a cleaning company that had undocumented workers working for it.

It seems it was discovered that the head honcho of the Department of Homeland Security, Secretary Michael Chertoff, has been having his home cleaned by a cleaning crew comprised, in part, with undocumented immigrants.

The moral to this story, besides the fact, that this exemplifies just how ingrained undocumented workers are in our society is that though these workers were screened every few weeks for the past four years, they always sailed through with flying colors — because of one important fact.

The Secret Service was the agency involved in screening the cleaners who worked at Secretary Chertoff's house. Yet, for an agency that is entrusted with keeping the most important government figures safe and who prides itself on catching criminals and thwarting illegal schemes, how could their screenings had missed such an important detail as the fact that these workers were undocumented?

    Easy.

Screenings that involve keeping such high-profile figures safe involves checking for the one element that would create an unsafe situation — a criminal background.

In other words, the Secret Service did their job and screened all these workers' criminal backgrounds — and they found nothing. It was only when they checked their immigration status that they realized they were here illegally.

But overstaying visas and being in the country without the proper paperwork is not and never has been the kind of crime that puts somebody's life in danger and warrants addition to the "Most Wanted" list.

Yes, these workers were working and taxes were being taken out of their paychecks and going where? Oh yeah, to that big pool of money Washington has saved where all the money taken out of checks of the people who work here without the proper paperwork have their money taken.

Money that they will never see but money that is conveniently ignored when they are accused of not paying taxes. Money that the same gray-haired critics of these immigrants will benefit from when it comes time to live off their Social Security.

While it has been evident for years that illegal immigrants pay a variety of taxes, the extent of their contributions to Social Security is striking: the money added up to about 10 percent of last year's surplus - the difference between what the system currently receives in payroll taxes and what it doles out in pension benefits. Moreover, the money paid by illegal workers and their employers is factored into all the Social Security Administration's projections. (2005 New York Times article)

Chertoff's situation exemplifies one thing — the vast majority of these undocumented immigrants are not criminals but workers who want to do the one thing everybody who wants to earn a decent wage wants to do — work.

Isn't it time we stopped forcing the criminal label onto undocumented immigrants to make them fit the definition of a group of narrow-minded people who in less than two months will have to start cleaning their own homes.

The article says the SS being deducted from an illegal alien's wages due to fake or mismatched SS numbers is in a suspense file, so how is this benefiting those Americans collecting SS now? The surplus money isn't being used!

It is really pathetic that anyone who is a citizen of this country would advocate profit over morality anyway.

Most Americans clean their own houses. It is only those who are fairly well off or rich that can afford domestic help. Are we to feel sorry for them because they might have to hire legal immigrants or citizens to clean their houses at a fair wage or they mights have to clean their own homes? Whose side are you on anyway?

One BECOMES a criminal when crossing our borders illegally. No it isn't a felony (but it should be) but it is still against the law. I don't care if it is a misdemeanor or a civil offense, it is still a crime in its own right.
Some of those crossing our borders illegally were already serious criminals and worse yet some could be terrorists. Why so little concern for the American people and the safety, security and the laws of this country?

Agreed NB. The only question not answered is how E Verify is expected to work when the use of fraudulent documents is so prevelant?

E Verify does NOT catch this.

From the logic standpoint, the only real solution to this problem is some type of ID system that no one seems to want period, or wants only as it pertains to "them" as opposed to "us" which would, basically, render it just as ineffective as having nothing at all.

So WHAT do we DO exactly? I'm at a loss personally.

There seems to be no way that American citizens will ever agree to a national identity card, and these days our identities are continually invaded and who knows how secure a national ID databank would be from hackers (and who knows if the databank would not be taken offshore to cheaper labor.)
Swiping a discount card at the grocery store produces coupons that match my shopping patterns. My CVS pharmacy refills my mom's prescriptions according to computer records, whether she needs them or not, or whether the doctor has changed the prescription or not. Then there is an automated courtesy call saying "your prescription is ready" without mentioning which one. And there seems to be no way to get her out of this pill-pushing. Doctors occasionally send medical test results on a postcard instead of in a letter, so the postal employees can read about your health. Warrantless wiretapping, the continual erosion of rights through the Patriot Act in all its ever-evolving interpretations, I fear the privacy we have always felt we had has been eroded to the point where the powers that be probably know more about each and every one of us than we know about ourselves. Amazing that with accumulated knowledge of the legal citizenry, there is no clue about Pablo or Vladimir that is here illegally.
