Licenses-for-aliens policy hit

Republicans launched a coordinated attack Friday on Gov. Eliot Spitzer’s proposal to grant New York driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants.

Niagara County Clerk Wayne Jagow, who takes charge of the local Department of Motor Vehicles, suggested the change would improperly put his employees on the “front lineâ€

Spitzer has quoted statistics indicating New York has between 500,000 and 1 million undocumented immigrants, many of whom drive without licenses and car insurance or with fake licenses. State officials say his plan will help enhance security, by creating public records on illegals, and cut insurance premiums for drivers statewide by about $120 million a year.

What is he thinking? When enough people commit the same crime to make it unmanageable the state will pass laws legalizing the criminal behavior. This is a dangerous road to go down. We have already created an atmosphere that promotes disrespect for our laws; this will be the nail in the coffin. A driver’s license gives one legitimacy and operates as a passport to many other areas that require i.d.
Gov. Spitzer is embarrassing himself.

Spitzer like most shady politicians is seeing future votes and present dollar signs.

I have emailed and called both Spitzer's office and the NY State tourism office telling them that I have cancelled all plans to ever visit NY state.
