Colo. considers modifications to federal immigration fingerprint program

DENVER (AP) — Colorado is considering possible changes to a growing federal program that uses fingerprints to catch illegal immigrants.
Several groups have written Gov. Bill Ritter to say they worry the program will intimidate crime victims and lead to racial profiling.
Ritter spokesman Evan Dreyer said Friday the concerns have prompted the governor to consider adding safeguards to the program. He didn't provide details and says the governor hasn't decided whether he will adopt the program.
The program known as Secure Communities has been controversial elsewhere. The Washington D.C. Council had proposed legislation to block it as police were negotiating some possible changes.
Immigration officials say 29 states so far have implemented the program but none have modifications.
