Even after racking up five year's worth of traffic violations and repeatedly being caught driving without a license, the illegal immigrant accused in last week's triple fatal crash still managed to have a car.

Hernandez, 23, was driving a Chevrolet Suburban when he broadsided a pickup truck last week, sending both vehicles careening into an ice-cream shop. The Suburban was the same vehicle Denver police impounded after Hernandez's July 18 arrest for driving without a license, giving police a fake name and resisting arrest.

The Suburban sat at a city impound lot for four days until it was released to an employee of Quality Mitsubishi, a Littleton car dealership that held the lien, said Capt. Frank Gale of the Denver Sheriff's Department. The dealership paid $180 in impound fees.

It's unclear how the vehicle got back to Hernandez.

Court records indicate the Suburban was registered to Rosa and Elifonso Avelar, of Aurora. Hernandez has used the Avelars address in the past. Records indicate Rosa Avelar, 55, also has used the same last name, Aleman, as Hernandez's girlfriend, Brenda, 19.
