Republican lawmakers introduce quartet of immigration proposals

DENVER - Republican lawmakers, trying to make illegal immigration a front-burner issue again, released four proposals Tuesday aimed at stopping undocumented aliens from voting or getting out of jail.

The quartet is a follow-up effort to this year’s series of bills with similar goals. But of six immigration-related proposals introduced in 2007, only one became law — Colorado Springs GOP Rep. Amy Stephens’ measure stopping judges from dismissing charges against illegal immigrants who have been arrested for local crimes and then deported.

Tuesday’s release came on the same day the Federation for American Immigration Reform issued a report saying there are 13.2 million illegal immigrants in the country.
