This is a much better way of pressuring the federal government to mount an effective immigration program.
Tancredo is an idiot. As per the US Constitution, only the federal government has the authority to enforce immigration laws. Local enforcement is already busy dealing with everyone's crime, illegal alien or not, and should remain focused on that. Illegal immigrants don't commit crimes because, hey, they already broke one law, why not the rest, they commit crimes for the same reasons everyone else does: stupidity and poverty. If the federal government can address immigration effectively (neither unconditional amnesty nor mass deportation), local governments can also more effectively address those issues at the heart of all crime. To that end, it is counterproductive to basic services because they are what will help these people integrate into our society.
That said, I think a good compromise would be to offer expedited citizenship to illegals who have been living and working the US and have maintained a clean record during that time. These are the people whose only crime was not filling out immigration forms, they are otherwise productive contributors. The ones who live up to their poor reputation can get back in line.Work Harder Millions on Welfare Depend on You!
