Coast Guard Cutter Returns to Hampton Roads With 4000 lbs. of Cocaine
The crew of the Coast Guard cutter Bear returned to Hampton Roads Friday with more than 4000 pounds of seized cocaine.
The drugs were seized from smugglers following a high speed chase off the Colombian coast on January 26.
During the chase, Coast Guard officials say the suspected smugglers began to jettison their cargo and refused to stop despite verbal and visual signals to do so. Ultimately, an armed helicopter used warning and disabling fire to safely stop the vessel.
The Coast Guard arrested four men from Columbia, and one from Mexico, and turned them over to federal drug agents.
The cocaine's value is estimated at $130 million.
Official say the seizure was the Bear's largest in its 20 year history."This country has lost control of its borders. And no country can sustain that kind of position." .... Ronald Reagan
